Veteran grunge band Soundgarden's greatest hits album will be bundled free with the first million launch units of upcoming music game Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock – in the US.

The deal will not be offered to European gamers, however, Activision confirmed to Eurogamer.

It is currently unclear whether the 12-track album, called Telephantasm, will be released as paid Guitar Hero downloadable content day and date with the game in the UK – as it will be in the US.

The press release calls the deal a "groundbreaking collaboration that marks the first time a new music album will be simultaneously released and bundled with a video game".

Telephantasm, a retrospective featuring the band's biggest hits, will be exclusively available with the game for one week prior to the album's retail release.

Soundgarden's new single, Black Rain, will debut exclusively on the Warriors of Rock disc.

"We're extremely excited to be collaborating with Soundgarden on this monumental moment in their music career," said Tim Riley, vice president of music affairs for Guitar Hero.

"Guitar Hero continues to break new ground by being the pre-eminent interactive platform for debuting original content and a stage for the biggest acts in all genres of rock and roll to reach new audiences in an all-new way."

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is due out on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii this September. Christian Donlan saw the game for Eurogamer.
