Bleszinski: Gears isn't Epic's legacy
More than a "f***ing chainsaw gun".
Gears of War mastermind Cliff Bleszinski doesn't want to be remembered for a "f***ing chainsaw gun".
He "adores" Gears of War, but he is "far from done" with creating video games.
"I can tell you now that if for the rest of my life I am only remembered for a f**king chainsaw gun, I will drink a bottle of whisky and put a gun in my mouth," Epic's iconic design director told Digital Spy.
"I am far from done with everything.
"There is plenty of life left in Gears," he added, "but you also don't want to beat a dead horse, right?
"Gears is amazing and I love it, absolutely adore it, but it will not be the final legacy of this studio."
Gears of War was used by Microsoft as a pin-up for what Xbox 360 could deliver, and by Epic as a pin-up for what Unreal Engine 3 could deliver. Now the Gears series prepares for a third instalment and Unreal Engine 3 is licensed by the world's best developers, including BioWare and Irrational Games.
Epic has also made strides on iPad and iPhone, notably with Infinity Blade, a fighting game that showcased what Unreal could achieve there. And it's in this emerging market Bleszinski is particularly interested.
"What are the ways that we can bring triple A to those realms?" he asked, cryptically. "Stay tuned."
