The Witcher series sells over four million copies
Selling every witch way.
The Witcher and its sequel The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings have cumulatively sold over four million copies, developer CD Projekt RED has announced.
The first Witcher was only released for PC and Mac, while its sequel launched last year on PC before receiving a snazzy enhanced edition on Xbox 360 a few months back. A Mac release is expected later this year, and the Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition will see and Xbox 360 release in Japan come August.
The series is based on Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski's bestselling fantasy novels about an amnesiac monster hunter named Geralt.
"I'm still amazed with the result we have achieved with The Witcher franchise," said head of CD Projekt RED Adam Badowski. "Many gamers on many platforms have been drawn to the vivid and complex world we have created. In the gaming world summer means a lot of great, hot deals. So if you still don't own the game look out for both retail and digital special offers."
While Dan Whitehead scored the first game a 7/10 in our official The Witcher review, both Quintin Smith and Simon Parkin gave its sequel a 9/10 in their reviews of the PC and Xbox 360 version respectively.
"In The Witcher 2, the backstory is as compelling as the plot that darts through it. And the weave of systems and story ensures that here is a legend as beautiful in the reality as it is in the telling," said Parkin in his appraisal.
Next up for CD Projekt RED is a game based on the tabletop RPG Cyberpunk. The developer said it will feature "an engrossing, absolutely non-linear storyline and will take players to a futuristic, hi-tech, but also decaying society."
