Gender-swapping mod makes Zelda actually star Zelda

Now Nintendo, can we please get a game where we play as Tetra?

Last week game developer Mike Mika modded Donkey Kong so his daughter could play as Pauline saving Mario and now modder Kenna Warsinske and her boyfriend Simon Travis have followed suit and swapped the Link and Zelda's roles in the original The Legend of Zelda.

"I played my first Zelda game when I was pretty young, and at the time, I thought the game did star Princess Zelda. I figured I'd get to play as a magical battle princess that saved her kingdom," wrote Warsinske on her Kenna Draws Stuff blog, where she detailed how the mod was made over the course of three days. "The game was fun, but I was bummed out that I never got to play as Zelda."

Thankfully, Warsinske is now all grown up and has the means to alter her beloved childhood pastime.

"It feels really good to play as Zelda. I feel like I connect with her character better and it makes me feel like a big damn hero," said Warsinske of the finished product. "It's so nice to be swinging around a sword as Zelda. I can't describe it. You really should try it for yourself."

Unfortunately, doing so requires scouring some nether regions of the internet for a rom as Warsinske can't exactly make her version available due to copyright issues. But if you do find a Zelda rom, Warsinske has detailed instructions on how to download and install her gender-swapping patch on her blog.

In over over 15 Zelda games there hasn't been a single one where you play as Zelda. To put this in perspective, there is a spin-off where you play as Tingle, the creepy mentally disturbed middle-aged wannabe elf. But Zelda? Not yet, I'm afraid.
