Nintendo 2DS' twin displays actually a single big touchscreen

Tonight is the night when two become one.

Believe it or not, Nintendo's curious new 2DS handheld actually only has one screen.

The tablet-sized device's twin displays are formed of one screen split into two by the 2DS' plastic casing, USgamer reports.

Nintendo's decision to manufacture the device this way was based on a desire to cut costs. Simply put, it's cheaper to create one larger screen and cover up the bits that aren't needed than create two discrete screens.

Curiously, this means the entire display is touch-sensitive, although the top half is protected by a layer of plastic that sits above it.

Modders could - theoretically - remove this protection, however, making 2DS the first dual touchscreen console from Nintendo.
