Nintendo's E3 2014 showing was full of unexpected ideas from the house of Mario - the offbeat but brilliant shooter Splatoon for example, as well as new prototypes from legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto.
Mario Maker was another surprise, a mix of the company's treasured heritage with a more contemporary focus on user-generated content. It's Nintendo meets LittleBigPlanet.
Eurogamer's YouTube editor Ian Higton recently tried the game's E3 demo and, despite a limited selection of items and enemies to play around with, managed to build a course which had me outfoxed. To be fair, it wasn't too tough a task.
