The Crew has artificial 30fps lock on PC
UPDATE: Ubisoft "aiming" for 60fps with final game.
UPDATE: Ubisoft has changed tack and said it is "aiming" for 60fps for the launch version of The Crew on PC.
Writing on the Ubisoft forum, community manager Natchai said the developers were "working on getting 60fps for PC".
"The reason you could alter the FPS in the config file is because our team is actually working on getting 60fps for PC. The reason why it hasn't been communicated before this is because we didn't want to make a promise we couldn't deliver on.
"But read this correctly:
"We are aiming at a 60fps on PC for the launch of the game and the actual beta doesn't represent the final game."
ORIGINAL STORY: The closed beta for the PC version of promising racing game The Crew is up and running, and players have expressed their surprise at the discovery of an artificial 30 frames per second lock.
"SeemsLegit.jpg" took to Ubisoft's forum to complain about the frame-rate of the PC version, and revealed that it is possible to change it to 60 - but only if you dig into the game's files.
Apparently setting The Crew to higher than 60 doesn't work - the game forces the frame-rate back down to 60.
The thread sparked a response from Ubisoft community manager Valentin, who confirmed The Crew runs at 30 frames per second on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
"The final game will run in 1080p with 30 frames per second on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, and will support up to 5760*1080p on PC for triple screen set-ups. Right now the team is focusing on providing an optimal experience for all players," Valentin wrote, before acknowledging the ability to up the frame-rate within the game files - but at players' own risk.
"You can unlock it in the file you've found, but it may affect the game's performances. Your call."
Fellow community manager Natchai added: "As for the people complaining about the artificial 30fps lock, you can see that there are ways users are unlocking more fps. We don't officially support that... but ye..."
UK community manager Mr_Shade also chimed in: "He did say you can unlock it.. for best performance on a range of hardware, it's locked to 30 when installed. User can unlock if they think the PC can handle it, but you may see the odd performance hitch."
So there you have it. Ubisoft didn't have anything to add when contacted by Eurogamer. The Crew is out in November 2014.
