The Gears of War movie is back on

The Gears of War movie is back from the gutter, this time with Universal Studios producing.

Developer The Coalition's studio head Rod Fergusson made the announcement during a Gears of War 4 livestream today. Unfortunately, he didn't offer any details insofar as who would write, direct, or star in it. But he did suggest that it won't follow the plot of the games as rigidly as one might think.

"When you're doing a movie like this, you have to realise that it's a different medium with a different audience," Fergusson said of the impending film. "I think if you were to go in and say, 'Okay, it's got to be completely 100 per cent faithful to the game canon,' or the story of the game, what's going to end up happening is it's not going to be the best movie. The big thing we're really trying to focus on is making the best Gears movie possible, as opposed to the one that's the most closest to the game."

This isn't the first time Gears of War was slated for the silver screen. Back in 2007 New Line was interested in making a Gears film and in 2012 Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides scribe Stuart Beattie was slated to pen the project. in 2013, Battleship and Ted producer Scott Stuber was reported to helm the film.
