Abe's Oddysee HD remake confirmed
MS denies Stranger's Wrath XBLA release.
An HD remake of classic platformer Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is in the works, Oddworld Inhabitants has confirmed.
"Abe HD is going into production," series creator Lorne Lanning told EGM, as reported by VG247, confirming that UK studio Just Add Water will be taking the reins.
"It's basically Abe's Oddysee being redone in a 3D physics engine as a 2D side-scrolling platformer," he explained.
"So the way Just Add Water wants to approach it, we thought was very smart; they are not trying to reinvent any wheels. It's like, 'Can we make that experience in a new engine, with new tech, in the old way?'"
No planned release date or platform information has been announced yet.
Developed by Oddworld Inhabitants, Abe's Oddysee first came out on PSone and PC way back in 1997. A number of sequels followed, which were recently bundled into a single Steam download, titled Oddbox.
An "enhanced remake" of the fourth game in the series, 2005's Stranger's Wrath, will also be available on PlayStation Network later this year. However, according to Lanning, Microsoft is blocking an Xbox Live Arcade release.
"We have Stranger all ready to go on XBLA, but the answer keeps being no," he said. "We're still talking to them and we're hoping to work it out."
