Arena.Xlsm is an RPG made by an accountant and played entirely in Microsoft Excel
Needs must.
What do you get if you take one accountant with "a fondness for spreadsheets, finance and business" and mix with "a life-long passion for video games"?
Well it's obvious isn't it? A turn-based RPG made and played entirely in Microsoft Excel. Never will an accountant appear to be so busy again.
Arena.Xlsm is the game, and it's free and available now. It's the handiwork of Cary Walkin, who made it while studying for a Business Administration Masters in Toronto, Canada.
Arena.Xlsm boasts "an emotional story" with four endings, eight bosses and four pre-programmed areas. Procedural generation makes up the bulk, though, and there are more than 1000 possible item combinations, 2000 possible enemies and apparently limitless areas to play in. There are 31 spells and 15 unique items that drop from specific enemies.
There's a FAQ on Walkin's website that you may need if you decide to give this a go.
Great stuff!
