Pro-gaming - Golf or Extreme Sport?
Muiy has posted a column over on Challenge-US about the future of pro-gaming and the CPL. One of the things he picked up on is the apparent attempt to pitch pro-gaming as an "extreme sport" in the vein of snowboarding.
"What I'm talking about is the huge presence that a person like Evil Ed had at the event. What I'm talking about is the guy on Thursday who got on the microphone and yelled, "ONE OF YOU IS GOING TO WIN 40 GRAND! C'MON MAKE SOME NOISE! I CANT HEAR YOU? MAKE SOME NOISE!". What I'm talking about are all the strippers running around. What I'm talking about are the various commentators and media-types who threw around the word "adrenaline" too damn much. I'm even talking about the idea that "neat, you can make 40k playing computer games!""
Looks like I'm not the only person who found Evil Ed a "little" annoying... The article also takes a look at what really makes pro-gaming compelling, why it is more like professional golf than snowboarding, and where it's going in future. Well worth a read.
