One of the more ambitious massively multiplayer games under construction at the moment is "3rd World", a free-form space sim inspired by "Elite" which is being developed in eastern Europe. Designer Vitomir Jevremovic describes it as "more like an online world than a game", because rather than the dull repetitive quests found in most massively multiplayer games at the moment, it instead relies on players to provide the gameplay. "We put the basic regulations, we put the objects and game system, and everything else is up to the players".

3rd World

"There will be no NPCs, no predefined quests, and no predefined scripts for making quests", according to Vitomir. "The game world should be expandable and allow the developer to add new content to the game as much as they like in real-time. Players will concentrate on the development of social status and connections among each other, rather then going around killing each other, and they will be fully concentrated on making their game world interesting for play, instead of ruining the game play."

It should make a refreshing change from your typical massively multiplayer fantasy role-playing game, and having met Vitomir at the ECTS trade show in London a few months ago we're certainly looking forward to finding out more about the game as it enters beta testing later this year.
