What The Division's world map does - and doesn't - include
Brooklyn not available at launch, despite being shown in trailers.
Ubisoft has finally nailed down the size of The Division's New York open world, which is set within the boundaries of Midtown Manhattan.
The Division recreates Manhattan's central third at a 1:1 scale, but it is still a smaller area than some were expecting.
Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Staten Island are not included - at least not at launch.
The lack of Brooklyn is especially odd, as areas within the district were shown in various trailers for the game - for example the E3 2013 trailer and the 2015 live action "Silent Night" trailer.
"With the level of detail we have, doing Midtown Manhattan is a huge open-world experience and more than enough to sink your teeth into," The Division creative director Magnus Jansén told Examiner. "It is a very sizable open-world game.
"For Tom Clancy's The Division we are going with Midtown Manhattan. It is because of the 1 to 1 re-creation and the way the pandemic has [happened]. Basically, everything has been hit and there are no more resources because everyone tried to get out. There is no more gasoline in the cars, there is no traffic, you're on foot."
The Division's map was shown off in a recent Open World Gameplay video, which also revealed the various districts which can be unlocked:
The area stretches the width of Manhattan from 56th Street, just south of Central Park, down to the southern edge of the Flatiron district.

So what will you be able to explore? Eurogamer's New York aficionado ran me through the landmarks we'll be able to visit:
"Classic skyscrapery New York is all here. You've got Bryant Park, which means you've got the library. You've got the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings, Times Square is in there.
"This is tourist NYC - landmark buildings and lots of skyscrapers. You could see a show, climb Rockefeller, take the Grand Central tour and eat at Bubba Gump's shrimp place in the New York that they are offering.
"But," he concluded, "I am 90 percent sure this means the Friends apartment will not be in the game."
It's slightly disappointing to hear The Division may lack some of the wider New York boroughs, but there's been no word yet on how the game's world will be expanded post-release.
Extra areas could easily be slotted in to the current game map - here's hoping for Infected Central Perk DLC.
