Assassin's Creed Odyssey has reversible boxart to let choose your cover star

We've come a long way from Assassin's Creed not letting you play as a woman - or from doing so only in short sections of its campaign.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey will let you play through the entire game as either female or male mercenaries Kassandra or Alexios - and just like the game itself, its reversible cover will let you pick your favourite.

That's according to creative director Jonathan Dumont, who revealed the detail in a reddit AMA last night.

It's not the first time a video game has offered two choices of box art to reflect a pair of protagonists. Mass Effect 3 featured FemShep on the reverse side of its box art - which is just another similarity between Odyssey and some of BioWare's games. Odyssey is all about player choice - with dialogue options, branching narrative during quests and that BioWare fan favourite: romance options. I played three hours of Odyssey just prior to E3 and came away impressed.

Large portions of Odyssey's E3 presentation featured gameplay as Kassandra, and Odyssey's tie-in novelisation tells the game's story from her point of view.

Ubisoft has been keen to stress there is no "canon" option for the main game, however. You are playing memories buried in splintered DNA which could have come from either protagonist, Ubisoft told Eurogamer, the animus is simply putting together the pieces for the simulation you're playing. So there we go.
