Nathan Fillion replaced by Nolan North for his Destiny character's final appearance
Uncharted territory.
Firefly and Castle actor Nathan Fillion did not return to record lines for this September's Destiny 2: Forsaken - the expansion which will see his fan-favourite character Cayde-6 killed off for good.
Speaking on the Kotaku Splitscreen podcast, Fillion said he was "unavailable" to voice the franchise mascot's final appearance. Cayde is instead played by Nolan North, who previously took over the role of Destiny's Ghost after Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage was replaced.
There's a bizarre irony to North's casting in Fillion's role, as yesterday Fillion released an Uncharted fan film where he took over the role of Nathan Drake - a character voiced by North in all of the Uncharted games.
Fillion gamely suggested there were no hard feelings, however:
"I wasn't available for this last instalment - it's not me doing the voice for Cayde-6," he said. "In a wonderful, amazing turn of events - it's actually Nolan North.
"Unfortunately these things don't work out and it's a little bit heartbreaking but if it has to go to someone else, then thank god it goes to someone I absolutely love and the fans love - the character was in good hands."
Amusingly, Fillion took some convincing Cayde-6 is really dead - even though Bungie has been pretty blunt on the whole situation. "We're not trying to trick you," game director Christopher Barrett said during our wide-ranging Destiny 2 interview at E3.
When informed by podcast host Jason Schreier the chances for Cayde-6's return looked slim, Fillion remained gamely optimistic:
"Well then in that case," he concluded, "my go-to would be: 'I'm really excited to work with Activision again and do the prequel of how we get to Cayde 1 through 5.'"
