Demonic ninja Noob Saibot returns for Mortal Kombat 11, first DLC character also revealed

With a major nod to the 1995 movie.

NetherRealm has revealed that Mortal Kombat's demonic ninja Noob Saibot will be returning for the series' imminent eleventh instalment - and that, of course, means a gore-drenched new introductory trailer.

Noob Saibot first made his mark on the Mortal Kombat universe when he appeared as a hidden, non-playable opponent in Mortal Kombat 2. Saiboot would debut as a selectable character two years later, in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and was last seen in 2011.

And if you're wondering about that unusual moniker (as a relative newcomer to the series, I was definitely confused), it's taken from the surnames of Mortal Kombat creators Ed Boon and John Tobias - only, you know, spelled backward.

As far as I can make out, Mortal Kombat's vast and swirling lore vortex states that Noob Saibot was, once upon a time (until he was murdered at least), the original Sub-Zero. But then, with Noob having shuffled off to the underworld, his younger brother decided to be Sub-Zero instead. Which may have caused some friction when Noob was resurrected. Christmas presents are probably not exchanged. You can see some of that familial animosity in the trailer above.

NetherRealm has also unveiled its first Mortal Kombat 11 DLC character, in the form of Shang Tsung. Notably, Tsung will be voiced by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, who played the naughty sorcerer in Paul W. S. Anderson's 1995 Mortal Kombat movie.

This is Shang Tsung. You can tell because it says Shang Tsung.

During its announcement stream earlier today, NetherRealm revealed that Tsung would be fronting regular Mortal Kombat mode The Krypt, which returns once more for the series' eleventh outing. The game releases on Xbox One, PS4, Switch, and PC on April 23rd.
