Bandai Namco pushes Tekken 7 Season 4 trailer early, confirms the long-awaited return of Kunimitsu
UPDATE: Official, first look at gameplay.
UPDATE 28th September 2020: As expected, Bandai Namco has announced Kunimitsu as a DLC character for Tekken 7, alongside a roadmap for the game.
Tekken 7's Kunimitsu is in fact the daughter of the Kunimitsu whose last canonical appearance was 25 years ago in Tekken 2. This new Kunimitsu happily throws off her mask - something her mother never did. We also see her face off against fellow ninja Yoshimitsu in the new Vermilion Gates stage - and steal his Manji blade. He seems upset!
Season Pass 4 gets you Kunimitsu and the new Vermilion Gates stage this autumn. Then, in early spring 2021, there's a new DLC character and stage.
ORIGINAL STORY 26th September 2020: Bandai Namco has seemingly pushed a Tekken 7 Season 4 trailer early, and revealed Kunimitsu as a DLC character in the process.
The video was published to Bandai Namco Brazil's YouTube channel before being taken down soon after, but of course the internet noticed. Tekken YouTuber YellowMotion took some screenshots of the trailer and published them on Twitter.
We get the full roadmap for Season 4: alongside fan-favourite Kunimitsu is a new stage called Red Gates for Q4 2020. Then, in 2021, a new character will be released alongside a new stage. All this comes with new moves, a new user interface, a renewed ranking system and upgraded online gameplay.
For the uninitiated, Kunimitsu is a mysterious treasure hunter and former member of Yoshimitsu's ninja clan who conceals the upper half of her face with a cat-shaped mask. She was a playable unlockable character in the original Tekken, and made her last canonical appearance in 1995's Tekken 2, although she's appeared in the non-canonical Tekken Tag Tournament games.
Here's Kunimitsu's ending from Tekken 2:
All this makes Kunimitsu's appearance in the canonical Tekken 7 hugely exciting for Tekken fans. Potentially even more interesting, according to images of the leaked trailer, is that Kunimitsu takes off her mask for the first time. But the person revealed underneath certainly doesn't look like the Kunimitsu we'd expect to see. In Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Kunimitsu had two scars on her face. Tekken 7's Kunimitsu does not, leading some fans to speculate that Tekken 7's Kunimitsu is the daughter of Kunimitsu from Tekken 2.
We'll find out soon enough - Bandai Namco is expected to reveal what's next for Tekken 7 in the early hours of tomorrow morning (2am Sunday 27th September).
