Sega mentions Sonic Rangers in its own press release
Twenty twenty blue.
During Sonic's 30th anniversary livestream, Sega teased a new Sonic game from Sonic Team due out at some point in 2022.
Without naming the game, Sega revealed this new Sonic game is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. The brisk accompanying trailer didn't show anything beyond the hedgehog running through a forest, and a mysterious symbol:
Sonic fans soon poked around the trailer's innards on the hunt for clues. Thankfully, Sega itself stepped in with a press release that names the game.
"Announcing new console experiences, Sonic Colors: Ultimate and Sonic Rangers, further details on Netflix's Sonic Prime, mobile news, musical events and much more!" reads the press release, sent to Eurogamer last night via email.
It seems the mention of Sonic Rangers was a mistake. The press release currently available to view online does not include the Sonic Rangers name:
"Announcing new console experiences, Sonic Colors: Ultimate and further details on Netflix's Sonic Prime, mobile news, musical events and much more!"
Eurogamer was told this morning that the original press release we received is an older version that was shared incorrectly, but there's no further information on Sonic Rangers right now.
So, it looks like someone somewhere accidentally included the name of the next big Sonic game in the initial PR email blast rounding up the announcements from the Sonic-themed virtual event. Whoops!
Sonic Rangers as a title doesn't tell us much, of course. Could the word "rangers" indicate a more open play area than we're used to from previous Sonic games?
