Assassin's Creed will resolve one of its biggest plotlines in a comic
Phoenix rising.
You may not know it, but Assassin's Creed hosts a detailed modern day storyline which has been building for years.
Many players ignore the present day parts in Ubisoft's historical action series - after all, they are the bits which hold you up from getting back to whichever time period you're exploring and stabbing people in the face.
But Assassin's Creed fans, especially the most hardcore ones, follow and theorise about this story all year long.
In between games, this time period has been expanded upon considerably through websites, novels and - increasingly - a growing number of comics.
Titan Comics has published Assassin's Creed graphic novels since late 2015, with story arcs that have visited the Salem witch trials and the Inca empire. The series is expected to run for at least three years.
Now, the comics are being given license to "culminate" a key story arc from the games: Project Phoenix.
Featured in Assassin's Creed Unity, Rogue and Syndicate, Project Phoenix is the evil Abstergo plot to obtain the DNA of a First Civilisation subject (the precursor race which, in Assassin's Creed, existed prior to humanity).
Abstergo's big plan is to sequence the DNA just like any other human's, and then explore the memories locked within.
This plotline has been building since Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, so it is somewhat surprising to see Ubisoft hand it over to the series' spin-off graphic novels to conclude.
On the other hand, it may be a signal of how next year's Assassin's Creed game will start its modern day story with a blank slate.
After a year break, next year's Assassin's Creed is expected to be set all the way back in Ancient Egypt, and act as a soft reboot.
