The western version of Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online, the MMO spin-off from the cult Japanese RPG series, has gone into open beta.

Western publisher Aeria Games has made the PC game available to download and play for free from its official site.

Closed beta began back in November, which was the first we'd heard of the Cave-developed MMO. But its speedy progress should come as no surprise - it's been running for two years already in Japan.

Imagine Online drops the usual Shin Megami Tensei devil-summoning into a massively multiplayer space, and will continue to be free to play on its launch, with item sales filling Aeria's coffers.

It's something to do while you wait for a European release of Persona 4, so you might as well take a look. We will too, and we'll report back soon.
