Control - How to activate the lights in the Fra Mauro AWE explained

How to free the Fra Mauro AWE area of Hartman.

After clambering through the Shifted Offices in the Control AWE DLC, you'll reach the AWE Loading Bay.

Beyond this area, you'll find the Fra Mauro AWE itself, which has been invaded by Hartman. To get rid of him, you'll need to activate the lights in the Fra Mauro AWE.

After this you'll need to visit the Eagle Limited AWE area or, if you've already fully explored that area, head on into the Bright Falls AWE.

AWE Loading Bay in Control explained

Before entering the AWE Loading Bay in the Control AWE DLC, summon a Deployed Raider using the nearby console. They'll assist you in defeating the various Hiss enemies which attack you in this area.

This will include the flying Hiss Rangers you'll see upon entering the room, two Hiss Elevated that will appear upon their defeat and a Hiss Warped. Use the cover provided by this large room to your advantage and keep moving to dispatch these enemies.

After defeating the Hiss and looting the various chests dotted about the AWE Loading Bay, you'll want to drop down to the tunnel entrance which is within the large gap in the middle of the bay.

Make your way through the tunnels and take the elevator at the end to reach the Control Point outside the Fra Mauro AWE area.

Collectable to find:

  • Research & Records - Research - Night Springs Screenplay Pg. 3
    • (On the computer bank in the first part of the AWE Loading Bay.)

How to activate the lights in the Fra Mauro AWE in Control

As you enter the Fra Mauro AWE in the Control AWE DLC, you'll see Hartman lurking in front of the lunar module and he doesn't wait long to put his murderous plan into action. He'll turn the lights off, plunging the room into darkness and, if you're not careful enough, leading Jessie to death's door.

Quickly, you'll want to run to your left to the Mobile Lab 1, which will still have its lights on, providing you a small oasis of safety.

Just outside the Mobile Lab 1 itself, you'll find a button, which, when pressed, will bring a spotlight over to your location.

This spotlight is the key to activating the lights in the Fra Mauro AWE, because it allows you to move safely throughout the darkened room; collecting the Power Cores you need and avoiding Hartman. It follows a set root once you've pressed the button to activate it, so make sure you're ready to go.

Since stepping outside of the spotlight will eventually lead to Jessie's death, we recommend you levitate as much as possible while using the lights to navigate the AWE. This will make it easier for you to avoid obstacles and, if you've maxed out the levitate ability, you'll be able to stay airborne for a good amount of time.

When you're ready, press the button again and follow the spotlight, making sure you pick up the Power Core as you go.

You will quickly reach another platform which still has its lights on. Here you can decide whether you want the spotlight to go left, going back the way you came, or right, which will continue its path through the room.

The left button will send the spotlight to the left, the right button to the right.

If you missed the Power Core, then this is a great time to use the spotlight to retrace your steps and grab it. A number of Hiss will have also entered the room at this point and, if they're in your line of sight, this is a good place to safely kill them.

If you have the Power Core, then you'll want to press the right button to venture further into the Fra Mauro AWE area - staying within the spotlight and bringing the core with you.

You'll reach the Mobile Lab 2 and here you'll be able to see two sockets which require Power Cores. If you've brought the first Power Core with you, then toss it onto the bottom socket, which will turn on a light and reveal a third socket.

Next, press the button on the computer bank to move the spotlight forward again and, in doing so, reveal the next Power Core.

If you're quick enough, you'll be able to launch this Power Core onto a nearby socket, before the spotlight vanishes. Be warned, however, as staying too long in the dark will allow Hartman to find you and, if he does, he will drain a significant amount of Jesse's energy.

After placing the two Power Cores on the available sockets, move the core on the lower socket onto the one you freed from darkness.

Doing so will activate the elevator to the left of the sockets, which you'll use to access the AWE area office.

Here you can turn on the main lights by flipping a switch, which will scare Hartman away. You'll also start the side mission, Gerbil Took The Top Head.

You're now free to explore the Fra Mauro AWE area and, when you're ready to move on, can exit through the Service Ducts in the office. This will bring you back to the entrance of the Fra Mauro AWE area, which will allow you to quickly return to the Investigations Sector.

Depending on the path you've taken through The Third Thing, the second mission in the AWE DLC, your next cross of action is either visiting the Eagle Limited AWE or the Bright Falls AWE area.
