Dark Souls 3 NPC quests - Vordt of the Boreal Valley
Meet Leonhard, Greirat and Hawkwood
CHECKLIST: BEFORE DEFEATING VORDT OF THE BOREAL VALLEY BOSS
Vordt of the Boreal Valley is the first major boss you'll encounter in Dark Souls III, and can be found deep in the bowels of Lothric Castle. To reach Vordt, you'll first need to navigate the castle's undead-infested battlements, known as the High Wall of Lothric, and slowly making your way down to the central courtyard. Vordt awaits beyond the fog gate at the end of the courtyard but, before besting him, ensure you've completed the following steps.
1. Introduce yourself to Leonhard the Ringfinger at the Firelink Shrine
As soon as you reach the Firelink Shrine for the first time, you'll be able make acquaintances with Leonhard the Ringfinger. You'll find him leaning against the side of the large, central throne, situated high above the bonfire in the main chamber. Speak with him to gain five Cracked Red Eye Orbs and set his lengthy quest line in motion.
2. Rescue Greirat of the Undead Settlement from cell beneath the Tower on the Wall
Once you've reached the Tower on the Wall bonfire in Lothric Castle, you can set about freeing Greirat. First, enter the tower and drop down a single level. Proceed through the nearby exit and continue along the wall until you reach the transforming enemy on the rooftop.
After the enemy is down, take a right and descend the ladder. There's a archway to the left, leading into a room directly below the transforming foe. Head in and pass through the first arch to the left. Finally, swipe the Cell Key from the corpse in a corner near the stairwell.
With the Cell Key in your possession, return to the Tower on the Wall and drop down one more floor. Head through the door at the bottom and follow the passage around until you reach Greirat's cell at the foot of the stairs. Use the key and speak with him; agree to help deliver the Blue Tearstone Ring to old Loretta in the Undead Settlement to warp him to Firelink Shrine.
3. Locate and speak with Hawkwood the Deserter at the Firelink Shrine.
Hawkwood will appear randomly at the Firelink Shrine, in several possible locations, until you've defeated the Curse-Rotted Greatwood, the Crystal Sage and the Abyss Watchers bosses. However, it's a good idea to locate and speak with him as soon as possible in order to initiate his quest line. If you can't find him inside the shrine (or standing at the grave with the sword resting on it, along the path to the left as you exit the shrine), try warping in and out of the area a few times.
Once all three bosses are defeated, he will leave the shrine and become available to summon just prior to the Oceiros boss fight at the Consumed King's Gardens, and at Archdragon Peak, close to the Great Belfry bonfire, as part of a special quest.
When Hawkwood leaves Firelink Shrine, speak with Blacksmith Andre to receive Hawkwood's Shield. Note that, if you miss this exchange, the shield may sometimes also appear on the grave that Hawkwood watches over, along the cliff edge to the left as you leave the shrine.
