Death Stranding - Find a way to cross the tar belt explained
How to complete the objective to help you reach the west coast.
Find a way to cross the tar belt is an objective at the end of Episode 8 of Death Stranding.
Once you have completed Order 62, which asks you to reach the Chiral Relay at the end of the central mountainous region of the game, you'll then be told by Die-Hardman you have to cross the tar belt - and nothing in your inventory will help.

How to Find a way to cross the tar belt in Death Stranding
After completing Order 62, take a few steps and Die-hardman will order to say there's nothing in your PCC that can help you cross the tar belt, but there must be a way.
As with previous times when you are stuck, the clue is to check your emails. Inside your inbox is an email from the Evo-Devo Biologist with the message titled 'Summoning Objects from the Other Side through the Tar', hinting that things swallowed up can rise from the depths.
So how do you do this, exactly? If you remember the major attacks by the BTs, tar will rise around you, alongside buildings. And that's exactly what you have to here.
From the newly added Chiral Relay station, head south-west along the coast towards the point on the map. You'll soon enter an area with BTs.
Keep going, and purposely get found and dragged under - don't resist it. You'll soon be dragged across the tar pit a little way, starting the familiar BT boss battle.
This time, however, the buildings that come up from the tar will act as a bridge across the tar pit. Climb the closest building and start making your way across them going south.
Don't worry too much if you need to step into the tar a little as you go, by the way - there will be some points where you'll have to stray a little way, but as long as mostly stay on the buildings, you don't get dragged under.
And if you do get dragged under, then you'll restart back at the north side of the tar pit - minus your cargo, but you won't be far away.
Towards the end, you'll see Amelie at the marker. Make your way through the tar near her to activate the cutscene and end the chapter.
This will then start Episode 9.
