AMD Radeon 7 performance analysis
Far Cry 5, Far Cry Primal, Ghost Recon Wildlands
Our barrage of performance testing continues with a trio of Ubisoft titles - Far Cry 5, Far Cry Primal and Ghost Recon Wildlands. Our test system remains the same obviously, so just to be clear here, we're looking at a Core i7 8700K running at an all-core turbo speed of 4.7GHz. This is paired with two 8GB sticks of 3400MHz DDR4 supplied by GSkill, with all titles running from solid state storage. To ensure that the powerful 8700K doesn't overheat, a Corsair H110i all-in-one liquid cooler is used.
Depending on how you view this page, our performance metrics are presented in one of two ways. If you're reading this on a mobile device, you'll get a table with average frame-rate and lowest one per cent measurements. However, if you're on a desktop or laptop, you get the full-blooded Digital Foundry experience. Play the YouTube videos to see frame-rate and frame-time metrics running in parallel to the video (you can even navigate around the video with the graphs adjusting to match). Beneath that you'll see our barcharts, dynamically generated from the frame-time metrics - mouse over for various stats and press the mouse button to swap over to the more useful percentage differentials.
All performance data is derived from video captures of each graphics card - no internal metrics here, the gold standard in analysis comes from measuring what's actually emerging from the video output of the GPU. Every single frame output from the GPU is represented in this page.
Far Cry 5
This is a fascinating title to test on higher performance hardware. At 4K resolution, Radeon 7 begins the test by moving convincingly ahead of the RTX 2080 in the simpler, earlier area, before losing pace the further into the open world we go. At the end of the sequence, we're effectively look at a dead heat - and a decent enough improvement over GTX 1080 Ti. At 1440p - and especially 1080p - the AMD DX11 driver causes issues, limiting GPU performance, even though we're benching with an i7 8700K locked to 4.7GHz on all cores.
Far Cry 5: Ultra, TAA
Far Cry Primal
Far Cry Primal at 4K resolution sees the Radeon 7 nestle nicely between the GTX 1080 Ti and RTX 2080 (though remember that the RTX Founder's Edition card does have a small factory overclock). Just like Far Cry 5, this title is heavily dependent on single-thread CPU power - but the i7 8700K has enough grunt to keep all GPUs fully occupied here. At lower resolutions, with less capable CPUs, the results may not be quite so close...
Far Cry Primal: Ultra, SMAA
Ghost Recon Wildlands
Ghost Recon Wildlands isn't exactly difficult to run well at its high setting, but once you push everything to ultra, it becomes one of the most challenging titles in our benchmark suite. Radeon 7 is just a touch slower than its nearest Nvidia competitors at 4K, but starts to lose a little more ground at 1440p - both against the Nvidia cards, and indeed Vega 64.
