AMD Ryzen 7 5700G: performance analysis

Hitman 3 and Total War Three Kingdoms.

So, the Ryzen 7 5700G: how does it perform in games? That's what this page starts to answer, as we take a look at performance in two recent releases, Hitman 3 and Total War Three Kingdoms. (We'd normally also test Flight Simulator 2020 here, but a major game update has rendered all our existing data worthless - so it goes.) Both games offer a stern test of computing resources, and with simulation quality turned up and graphical niceties turned down the emphasis should be firmly on processor performance.

Before we start - we do things differently. On a desktop browser, press play on the embedded YouTube videos of each test scene to see how each CPU fares in real time. There's also a bar chart which you can mouse over to see different measurements and click to switch between frame-rates and percentage differences. On mobile, you'll get a basic overview, with the video capture of each GPU being translated into simple bar charts with average frame-rate and lowest one per cent measurements for easy comparisons.

Hitman 3

Hitman 3's Dubai benchmark, paired with low graphical settings but 'best' simulation quality results in a heavy CPU bottleneck. The first game we've tested shows a small performance regression for the 5700G compared to its Ryzen 5000 counterparts, likely due to the reduced cache size on the APU. The results are still competitive though, with the 5700G outperforming the old 10600K and turning in a performance roughly similar to the Core i5 11400F at 1080p. The differences are less evident at 1440p, where average frame-rates converge, but note that the worst one percent metrics remain lower for the 5700G and 10600K - so you can expect a slightly less stable experience on these processors. This is still true at 4K, although the differences by this point are largely meaningless as GPU performance starts to become the dominant factor.

Total War Three: Kingdoms

We're using the Battle benchmark in Total War: Three Kingdoms, as the campaign benchmark included in the game is bugged. This means that we could see heavier CPU utilisation in other scenarios, but this should be indicative of performance in battles with large numbers of soldiers. Again, we see a small performance deficit for the 5700G at 1080p, worst one percent scores are noticeable at 1440p and performance closes up perfectly at 4K.

Total War Three Kingdoms: DX11, Low

Two games, two examples of the 5700G getting outperformed by the 5600X. Let's see if the trend changes in our next three tests, which are all FPS games of some notoriety.
