Honourable Mentions
Burnout Dominator
While Burnout 5 winds its way to the Xbox 360 and PS3, replete with new free-roaming cities and other such next-gen foolery, the series also continues to evolve on the older PlayStation platforms. Dominator is reported to be the spiritual successor to the hugely popular Legends, and for Burnout purists, this could well be the high-octane racing title of choice for 2007.
Every Extend Extra
- Developer: Q Entertainment;
- Publisher: Buena Vista Games
- PSP Only
- Gamepage
Just when you think you've seen everything that shoot 'em ups have to offer, some madman in Japan turns the whole genre on its head. Infused with Q Entertainment's trademark psychedelic music and colours, Every Extend Extra is a shoot 'em up without the shooting - instead, you can only detonate your own ship and hope to balance the risk against the reward of extra lives to replenish your stockpiles. It's every bit as clever as it sounds, and damn good fun to match.
God Hand
- Developer: Clover Studio;
- Publisher: Capcom
- PS2 Only
- Gamepage
Few games divide opinion like God Hand, with the game's difficulty curve already approaching the legendary status of Ninja Gaiden in the annals of the medium. However, Clover's fond tribute to games like Final Fight and Streets of Rage attracts many gamers in search of a challenge, and the good humour evident throughout excuses many sins.
Prince of Persia: Rival Swords
- Developer: Ubisoft Montreal;
- Publisher: Ubisoft
- PSP Only
- Gamepage
The PlayStation Portable conversion of the final chapter in the Prince of Persia trilogy may not introduce very many new aspects to the game, but for those who missed the game's original outing, it's still well worth playing - with excellent gameplay and the Prince's own struggle with his dark alter-ego providing for a compelling game.
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2
- Developer: Atlus;
- Publisher: Atlus / Ghostlight
- PS2 Only
- Gamepage
Following on directly from the atmospheric Digital Devil Saga, this sequel is a welcome return to the interesting anti-hero Serph (who may actually be more of a villain than even he suspects) and the twisted, desolate worlds of the series.
The gameplay remains broadly similar to the previous game - but more of the same is more than welcome, in this case.
The Elder Scrolls Travels: Oblivion
- Developer: Bethesda;
- Publisher: 2k Games
- PSP Only
- Gamepage
The announcement that Oblivion, one of the most expansive games ever created, was to come to the diminutive PlayStation Portable was greeted with scepticism - but it's happening nonetheless, albeit not exactly in the form of a direct port. The PSP version reportedly takes place in a new setting, and as such, we can expect it to be quite a different game, but worth watching closely regardless.
Wild Arms: Cross Fire
- Developer: Media.Vision;
- Publisher: SCE
- PSP Only
- Gamepage
Little is known about Media.Vision's forthcoming PSP instalment in the Wild Arms series of JRPGs, aside from the fact that you'll be able to transfer save data across from Wild Arms 5 on the PS2. However, the Wild West themed series has delivered gems on occasion - and the surprisingly RPG-starved PSP could certainly do with a new original title in the genre.
