How to unlock the Wonderboy and Old Betsy Fishing Rods

While the Basic and Natural rods are unlocked from the start of the game - you simply visit a shop and purchase them - the other two require some steps first.

The Wonderboy Fishing Rod and the Old Betsy Fishing Rod can only be unlocked by completing specific missions in Hope County. One is relatively easy, and serves as something of a tutorial (as well as unlocking a fishing 'hard spot').

How to complete Skylars missions Gone Fishin' and The Admiral to unlock Wonderboy

Unlocking the Wonderboy Fishing Rod requires you to complete three missions for a character named Skylar. These missions are:

• Tools of the Trade
• Gone Fishin'
• The Admiral

Here's how to complete them, in order:

Tools' of the Trade (reward - $700)

Head on down to Dylan's Master Bait Shop (it's in between the South Park Entrance and the Silver Lake Parking Lot).

You'll find Skylar outside the trailer, beating the door down with her baseball bat. Turns out her boyfriend has locked himself in the trailer with her fishing rods and refuses to come out.

Accept the quest and destroy the three parts of the trailer that are flashing (the sewage tank, the beer keg and the satellite dish).

He'll then give in and throw the rods out - if you don't have one equipped yet, grab one and follow Sklar and she leads you to Widow's Creek. Follow her to the water's edge and mimic her actions to catch yourself a rainbow trout.

Repeat this two more times and Skylar will thank you for your time, as well as dropping hints about a fabled fish known as 'The Admiral'.

Gone Fishin' (reward - $700)

Speak to Skylar at Widow's Creek and you'll begin the second mission of her questline. You'll need to prove your fishing skills to her before you team up to take on the fabled fish known as The Admiral.

You'll need to catch one salmon, one bass and one sturgeon. Avoid any hard spots for now, and find one of the spots Skylar has added to your map for each type of catch.

You can choose any location that has any of the three fish types in its waters. We chose the Chinook Salmon spot just east of the Lansdowne Airstrip.

It's a good idea to use the special flies included with the Fisher King perk - the Salmon Egg bait is ideal for catching salmon.

For the sturgeon, we opted to go to the sturgeon fishing spot east of Rye & Sons Aviation. There will probably be a gunsmith there fishing as well. We also found this place to be a rare safe haven from plane flight patterns (if you've reached level three in John's region).

Use the Hybrid Sturgeon fly to catch this fish, but be warned - sturgeon are fiesty and it'll put up a fight before it's dinner.

For the bass, we went all in and went for the Rock Bass (Hard) fishing spot located due west of Hope County Jail. There's a gunsmith here, so you'll know you're in the right place. Use a Bass Popper to ensure you're going to attract a bass.

When you've collected all three, Skylar will call you, completing the mission.

The Admiral (reward - $1,450, Wonderboy Fishing Rod)

To start the final mission of Skylar's questline, head to the pier at Clagett Boathouse. Skylar will be on the pier. Turns out she's hurt her hand punching a cultist while trying to fish the legendary Admiral. Now it's up to you to catch the blighter for her.

Swim over to the marker on your screen, and approach the hut with the cultist symbol on it. Turn around, and cast your line into the water (the Admiral is, in fact, a sturgeon so a Hybrid Sturgeon fly will help a lot).

To make life easier, try casting your line to a medium length, so you have enough time to tap L2/LT to wiggle the line, but you're bringing it close enough to reduce the amount of work you need to do to catch The Admiral.

Avoid snapping the line (when it turns red) and keep at it and the big fish will be yours. Swim back to Skylar, avoid any nearby foes and speak to her to complete the mission and bag yourself a nice pile of cash and a new Wonderboy Fishing Rod.

With that done, it's time to unlock Old Betsy. Doing so will help you find Hard Spot fishing locations in Far Cry 5, where some of the game's most lucrative - and challenging - fish are found.
