How to join Gryffindor, Slytherin Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw in the Harry Potter mobile game.

Good news - there are Hogwart's Houses in Harry Potter Wizards Unite, Niantic's take on the wizarding world.

Though it's purely for aesthetic purposes, and doesn't affect gameplay, it means you can represent either Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw.

Though it's not integral to how Wizards Unite works, it's such a core part of world of Harry Potter that it's no surprise Houses feature in some way.

This page explains how how to join or change your House in Harry Potter Wizards Unite as part of your Ministry ID, and everything else you need to know about your Profile and House choice.

How to join a House and change Houses in Harry Potter Wizards Unite

To join a House in Harry Potter Wizards Unite, you need to go to your Ministry ID. This is your profile, and it's found at the bottom left corner of the main field screen.

Now you're on the Ministry ID screen, you can then select House on the upper right.

From there, you are presented with the four Houses - Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw. There is no sorting or test here - simply choose your preference, and with a single tap, you're in!

To change Houses in Harry Potter Wizards Unite, simply repeat the above steps. As far as we can tell there is no penalty for changing Houses, and though it's probably poor etiquette among Harry Potter fans to do so, the option is there if you need or want it!

What is the best House to choose in in Harry Potter Wizards Unite - Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw?

There is no such thing as the 'best House' in Harry Potter - not in the books, and certainly not in the game, as it has no impact on your standing or who you can play with. It's purely cosmetic.

If you haven't already got a preference between the four Hourses - Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw, then it's worth looking at their various traits to help you decide, with descriptions verbatim from the Pottermore website:

HouseValuesNotable members
Gryffindor
Courage, bravery and determinationHarry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley
Slytherin
Pride, ambition and cunningSeverus Snape, Draco Malfoy and Lord Voldemort
Hufflepuff
Patience, Loyalty and fair playNewt Scamander, Cedric Diggory and Nymphadora Tonks
Ravenclaw
Wit, learning and wisdom Luna Lovegood, Gilderoy Lockhart and Filius Flitwick

If you want the decision made for you - like how the Sorting Hat decides for Hogwart's pupils - then we recommend visiting the official Pottermore site, where after answering a series of questions, tells you who you would join if you were part of the Wizarding World.

What does Houses in Harry Potter Wizards Unite do?

The good (or depending on how you look at it, bad news) is your House choice doesn't affect the game in any way.

For those completely new to Harry Potter, the four Houses represent the four founders of the school setting of Harry Potter's story, and each new student is sorted into each one, and represents their abilities and personalities.

Unlike Pokémon Go Teams, which pits three sides against one another for ownership of public spaces such as Gyms, your House choice is purely for cosmetic reasons, despite each House having certain traits that define its members.

The four founders of Hogwarts - Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Salazar Slytherin and Rowena Ravenclaw - of which the Houses are named after.

Why? The idea of Harry Potter is one of co-operation rather than competition, and it's something that Wizards Unite wants to embody. Our interview with executive producer Mary Casey explains this in more detail:

"We all have a part to play, we all have a role to play, and that's really important. So Harry Potter to me is really about bringing diversity, diverse people with diverse skillsets together, Harry's friends were - obviously Hermione and Ron had very different skill sets, but people like Neville and Luna as well, we didn't want to exclude them to another team, we wanted to bring them together," she said.

"And so, we made the decision to not go with competitive houses, and allow people with different houses to play together cooperatively and to overcome the calamity."
