Here's a full 10-minute match of Capcom's multiplayer Resident Evil spin-off Project Resistance
Futile.
Capcom's shown off a full match of Resident Evil spin-off Project Resistance.
The video below shows the match from both the survivor's and the mastermind's perspective. (We see the perspective of three of the four survivor players, with the other picture in picture reserved for the mastermind player.)
Project Resistance is a team-based shooter that leans heavily on asymmetrical play, and, according to our Martin, "pushes the Resident Evil formula to odd extremes."
"Having played Project Resistance for a couple of hours, I can say, hand on heart, that it's by no means a bad game - even if it does initially conjure up grim flashbacks to the miserable Operation Raccoon City and Umbrella Corps (and of course Resident Evil Outbreak, which is a slightly kinder comparison)," he wrote in our Project Resistance preview.
There's a lot going on in the video, with the three players cramped in their surroundings while monsters from the Resident Evil series are sent to kill them by the mastermind player. And yes, at one point, Mr. X is spawned for some stompy stalking. For me, the user interface feels a bit archaic and cluttered, and there's way too much taunting from the mastermind for him not to sound annoying ("SOMETIMES IT'S EASIEST JUST TO DO THINGS YOURSELF").
Capcom faces what looks like an uphill struggle to get the Resident Evil community on-side for Project Resistance. As Martin reported, it's a project Capcom is openly saying may never make it to release. There's a closed beta running from 4th-7th October on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, after which opinion will be gauged and a decision made as to whether there's enough here to justify pushing through to launch.
Based on the initial reaction, there's plenty of work to do. On the video in this article the dislikes outweigh the likes. Earlier in September, producer Matt Walker tried to address the complaints in a Twitter thread:
"Been seeing a lot of people who are not pleased with the idea that we're making Project Resistance. It's totally valid that people want more of that quality core experience offered in RE2 and RE7. My take - we as a company need to continue to branch out and try to offer up new gameplay in addition to refining the experiences people expect from us. If we just continue to offer up the same thing over and over again, people will gradually lose interest with what we're making."
