Animal Crossing New Horizons might be the third biggest launch in the Nintendo Switch's history.
In a series of tweets, independent video game analyst Benji Sales speculated that whilst they'd initially expected the relaxing island sim to feature somewhere in the top five most successful Switch titles, they'd now revised this. Sales now suspects it'll feature in the top three and sit somewhere amongst titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and Super Mario Odyssey.
"Animal Crossing New Leaf was the previous best selling Animal Crossing games. Hitting over 12 million sold lifetime," they said. "I expect now New Horizons will be over 12 million shipped within the next few months.
"Whatever your optimistic sales expectations for Animal Crossing New Horizons launch sales were, I can already tell you it's too low", the analyst writes on Twitter (thanks, wccftech), whilst acknowledging that without sight of digital sales, it's difficult to be certain. "Holy hell, HUGE opening incoming."
The highly-anticipated Animal Crossing New Horizon was released on 20th March, 2020. In the Eurogamer review, Martin said: "even some 90 hours in, Animal Crossing: New Horizons maintains its ability to surprise. It's how each day presents a new mystery to unravel, or a new visitor to hang out with - though often it's satisfying enough just to check in to see how your flowers are doing. I just went for another morning stroll, and spotted Billy the trouble-making goat running arms out through a copse of trees, a look of glee fixed on his face. I can't bring myself to make him leave; indeed, I think I properly like him now, for all his faults."
