It turns out Spider-Man Miles Morales on PS5 is an "expansion" to Spider-Man on PS4
UPDATE: Insomniac calls it "standalone" amid confusion.
UPDATE: Insomniac has said Spider-Man Miles Morales is a "standalone game" amid confusion about the nature of the title following Sony's PS5 reveal event.
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph published shortly after the PS5 reveal, Sony Interactive Entertainment EVP head of European Business, Simon Rutter described Spider-Man Miles Morales as an "expansion" and an "enhancement to the previous game". This led to some reports claiming the game to be a remaster of Spider-Man PS4 with extra content thrown in.
However, Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier took to Twitter to say Spider-Man Miles Morales is in fact a "brand-new, standalone game similar in scope to Uncharted Lost Legacy", as we suggested in our original report, below.
According to Bloomberg (paywall), Spider-Man Miles Morales will be "significantly smaller" than Spider-Man PS4, and as a result be cheaper than a full-price game.
ORIGINAL STORY: If you watched the PlayStation 5 reveal event last night you'd be forgiven for thinking Spider-Man Miles Morales was a brand new, fully-fledged Spider-Man game for Sony's next-gen console. It turns out, this isn't the case.
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph (paywall) published this morning, Sony Interactive Entertainment EVP head of European Business, Simon Rutter described the Insomniac-developed title as an "expansion" and an "enhancement to the previous game".
"I guess you could call it an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game," Rutter said. "There's a substantial Miles Morales component - which is the expansion element - but also within the game as well there's been major enhancements to the game and the game engine, obviously deploying some of the major PS5 technology and features."
So, based on this quote, what exactly is Spider-Man Miles Morales? It sounds a bit like what Uncharted: The Lost Legacy was to Uncharted 4, or InFamous First Light was to InFamous Second Son - but with next-gen bells and whistles.
What is clear is that Spider-Man Miles Morales is not the Spider-Man 2 video game we all expect Insomniac to be developing. And with a release date of Christmas 2020, just two years after Spider-Man came out, perhaps that's no surprise.
So! Speculation time. What actually happens in Spider-Man Miles Morales? My money's on the game being a sort of training for Miles Morales that leads directly into Spider-Man 2, when the mantle is passed. Could Peter Parker die for that to happen?
