A duck, a boar and a human walk into Funcom's new mutant strategy game
Pity it's not called From Tusk till Down.
Funcom has announced a new game starring an unlikely bipedal trio of duck, boar and some kind of human. It's an XCOM-style tactical adventure in a post-human Earth, and it's made not by Funcom but by a small new developer called, um, Bearded Ladies, which was formed by ex-Hitman developers and Payday designer Ulf Andersson. Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, as it's called, looks pretty good.

Overwatch hero 27 in the spotlight as the teasing begins
UPDATE: Schematic of shield and... jetpack cat tweeted.
UPDATE 28TH FEBRUARY 9AM GMT: Another day, another tease, and it's more schematics for equipment. This time there's a design for a shield which looks a lot like Reinhardt's - check the lion's head in the centre - only smaller, given the measurements supplied and the words "kompakt!!" scribbled next to it. The similarities to Reinhardt's shield reinforce this being Brigitte, as she not only makes and mends his equipment, she's very close to him - him being a godfather figure to her.

Feature | Why are turn-based games so good at creating stories?
Slow, slow, quick.
It was Superhot that first made me think about the old writer's adage, that you do the slow stuff fast and the fast stuff slow. This is the thinking that powers Jack Reacher novels, for example - Lee Child talks about this trick often and with great clarity. If Reacher's doing a bunch of research, you whip through it in a couple of lines. Literary montage! If Reacher's outside a bar, though, and a horseshoe of bad'uns is forming around him, time slows until it forms a thick mineral goop that traps everyone within it. The next few seconds are going to involve the shattering of kneecaps and the bruising of aortas (if aortas are a thing that can be bruised - having typed it, I am unconvinced). The next few seconds are going to be violent and memorable. Crucially, the next few seconds are going to take eight or nine pages to play out, because every move will be examined in great forensic detail. We will count the separate sparks in the air, and be deafened by the clatter of a spent cartridge case rattling on the tarmac. We will be fully present and fully conscious in these terrible, glorious moments.

Digital Foundry | Does Switch's new Doom patch improve performance?
And what about boosts to image quality?
We like the Switch version of the Doom 2016. We respect its remarkable technological achievements and we're blown away by the fact that a playable version of this game exists at all for Nintendo's hybrid machine, but the fact is that the game has issues. The drop from 60fps to half-refresh was inevitable, but the impact to resolution and wobbly performance detracted significantly from the overall experience. Last week, developer Panic Button released a patch for the title and to say that people were excited about its potential would be a vast understatement - our social media was awash with demands to re-test the title, with many believing they were seeing some profound improvements in the revised code.

Interview | How Human: Fall Flat rose up to become a smash hit
'I decided if it was down to these ethics I should be selling drugs instead of making free-to-play games.'
Its name invites calamity, a certain misfortune, and I absolutely adore it for its blunt simplicity. Human: Fall Flat. That, there, is slapstick served up with a certain eastern European dryness. It's perhaps little wonder, then, that this comic puzzler has done so well in the 18 months or so since its release, having recently racked up some two million sales. Fall flat? It's done just about anything but.

Recommended | Moss review - PlayStation VR's finest game to date
Mighty mouse.
Set in an enchanting, storybook world, Moss is an interactive fairytale of grand adventure, bravery and friendship.
