Microsoft and PlayerUnknown dance around the thorny issue of Battlegrounds console exclusivity
A mixed level two bag.
Gamescom 2017 is drawing to a close. Games have been played, the hangovers have started and the cosplayers are shifting into their formal mortal selves. It's been an interesting week for Europe's largest gaming event, so it's no surprise the world's hottest developer, Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene, was there dropping teasers on what's happening with PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds - and he sure dropped a bomb.

Feature | The wonderful little details in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
Naughty Dog once again flexes its muscles.
The Uncharted games are known for their attention to the little things. Whether it's a room packed with incidental clutter or the way playable characters interact with the environment, Naughty Dog often delivers a level of detail beyond most other developers. The recently-released standalone expansion The Lost Legacy is no different.

Star Wars Battlefront 2's space battles could do with a little George Lucas
Why DICE and EA could do with loosening up a little for the sequel.
Star Wars Battlefront 2, and its all-new space battles, demand absolutely nothing of you. Maybe a couple of rounds to figure out the spectacularly counter-intuitive flight controls, if you're anything like me - but nothing else.

Recommended | XCOM 2: War of the Chosen review
Welcome back (again), Commander.
War of the Chosen's first mission plays out exactly the same as in the original XCOM 2, which caught me a little by surprise. After being treated to a brand new intro cinematic that partly rewrites how the Commander is rescued in the opening moments of XCOM 2, I was expecting something new, something flashy. But there I was, once again, leading four under equipped rookies into Operation Gatecrasher and wishing they'd brought a few more grenades.

Recommended | F1 2017 review
A Goodyear.
It was always better back in the day, wasn't it? Over the years I've collected all sorts of F1 paraphernalia - pocketfuls of discarded rubber picked up from just off the racing line of Eau Rouge during a post-race track invasion, photos of drivers awkwardly coerced into standing next to me and even a set of Johnny Herbert's Goodyear Eagles from a Monza test session that the cats now like to nestle in at the foot of my dad's garden - but an enduring favourite is a compact disc, an unofficial piece of memorabilia from the 1995 season. It is, quite simply, a compilation of sounds from that year's Belgian Grand Prix, and it's electric.

Feature | Slime Rancher is the poop-farming sim you didn't know you needed
Get it while it's free-range.
I love a game that is both as sweet as apple pie and as dark as pitch, and Monomi Park's bubbly sci-fi farming sim Slime Rancher is very much one of those. A sort of first-person Harvest Moon knock-off with a splash of Dragon Quest, it casts you as Beatrix LeBeau, a pioneer seeking her fortune on a distant planet overrun by squealing, bouncing, emoji-faced slimes. Feed a slime something and it'll squeeze out a "plort" (a frightful piece of onomatopoeia that puts me in mind of, ugh, "squanching" from Rick & Morty). Scoop up and fire that plort into your farm's market terminal using your trusty vacuum gun, and you'll earn cash. That's right, this is a game about the economics of poop, and the in-game Slimeopedia is only too happy to go into detail about what each creature's excretions are used for back on dear old Earth.

Feature | How we tried (and failed) to recreate Neymar's world record transfer in Football Manager 2017
Que sera, Neymar.
Neymar's transfer to Paris St Germain from Barcelona was a landmark moment in the history of football. The £198m transfer fee made the Brazilian forward the most expensive footballer in the history of the game, more than doubling the amount Manchester United coughed up for Paul Pogba in July 2016.

Feature | Near mint: A conversation with game collectors
For the hoard!
Pride of place in Jason's game room is a stacked shelf of big-box PC games. In the days before Steam homogenised the purchasing process, packaging was an appealing element in buying new PC games, which often released with foldout maps, hefty manuals and lavish boxes. Jason has always been a fan, and they are among his favourite games to collect.

Razer's new Xbox One controller makes the Elite pad sound cheap
It's got its own lighting scheme.
Xbox controllers are expensive aren't they? But accessory maker Razer has topped the lot.

Recommended | Undertale review
Determined.
Undertale is a game all about endings, so it's fitting that its console release comes towards the tail-end of one particular piece of hardware's life. If this is a finale of sorts for Sony's PlayStation Vita, then it's a wonderfully apt one - there's something irresistible about the pairing of a handheld that became the home of a number of indie darlings and this, the indie phenomenon of the past few years.
