  2. Splatoon 2's single-player is an enjoyable if familiar encore

It is, if you want to look at it one way, simply more of the same. Splatoon 2's single-player doesn't offer up any big twists or surprises on the original's formula (okay, there is one delicious plot twist that I'll let you discover on your own), but that's not to say it doesn't have the ability to delight you over the course of its adventure.

Fantasy Strike is a fighting game for everyone

Built by a fighting game expert.

I love fighting games, but I understand they're too complex for many people to bother with. This is a problem the genre has run up against for years, and the likes of Capcom and Namco and NetherRealm have struggled to come up with a solution.

  12. The Switch just got a game that channels the spirit of Smash Bros and WarioWare

A caveat up front: while I think I have experienced much of what De Mambo has to offer, it is entirely possible that I am like a child, as Newton once put it, playing with shells on a stretch of beach while behind me an entire ocean roars and tugs at the shore, unseen. De Mambo feels like quite a focused game when you're jabbing away at the single button it is largely built around, lost in the red-blooded moment. But it also feels like a vast game, menus filled with jokes and throwaway animations, "bits of business" as the Laurel and Hardy people used to call it. I can imagine offshoots and flourishes and entire side-modes hidden in there somewhere waiting to be unlocked. And yes, Newton to Laurel and Hardy in a single paragraph? This too feels entirely apt.

  16. Final Fantasy 12's PS4 remaster is a great upgrade for 1080p gaming

Digital Foundry | Final Fantasy 12's PS4 remaster is a great upgrade for 1080p gaming

But PS4 Pro's high resolution support doesn't quite cut it.

We didn't quite know what to expect from Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age on PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro. On the one hand, developer Virtuos Games did a good job with its existing Final Fantasy 10 and 10-2 remasters, with decent artwork upgrades that sat well on a full HD display. On the other hand, the same developer handled Batman: Return to Arkham - a reasonable port, but with scant upgrades for PS4 Pro users. The good news is that The Zodiac Age is the best way to experience Final Fantasy 12, but the bad news is that PS4 Pro users are still poorly served with only minimal upgrades over base hardware.

  22. Mercy me: in praise of gaming's greatest healer

Feature | Mercy me: in praise of gaming's greatest healer

    Now, where am I needed?

I've picked a hell of a time to pen a love letter to Mercy. As these words are being written, the Overwatch-playing internet is having kittens over the long-awaited arrival of Doomfist - Talon elder, social Darwinist and a pugilist whose right hooks show up on a seismograph. Doomfist is yet another damnably cool addition to a line-up of damnably cool characters, all of them worthy of a game by themselves. His most terrifying facet may be his passive ability, which applies a fresh layer of overshield for every punch that connects, allowing a rampaging player to weather the concentrated wrath of the other team. But he's still going to need a medic at some stage, particularly if he falls into Sombra's clutches, and who better to supply the juice than a cybernetic valkyrie from Switzerland.
