Feature | The teen who spent over a year piecing together Destiny's unreleased music
Midi-multi tool.
In April 2014, veteran Bungie composer Marty O'Donnell took to Twitter to say he had been fired. Only afterwards, amid a messy lawsuit between the two parties that spilled out into the public domain, did we learn that his work on Music of the Spheres, which was intended to be a musical prequel to online shooter Destiny, had caused a rift within Bungie's board of directors. The court papers said Activision had little enthusiasm for releasing Music of the Spheres as a standalone work, and that Bungie management felt O'Donnell was elevating his interest in publishing Music of the Spheres over the best interests of the company. The upshot was that its release had been canned, and Marty, who had spent two years on the project, was furious.

Opinion | Xbox is close to being a brilliant games platform, but it needs games to get it there
The pressure's on for E3.
We would say this, but Microsoft's decision to reveal the specs of Scorpio, its Xbox One hardware refresh, exclusively through Digital Foundry was a very smart move. They knew a leak was likely once the machine was presented to developers, so they got in front of it. And they know that this souped-up console needs to win back the hearts and minds of the gaming hardcore who defected to PlayStation three and a half years ago. To convince those guys, you need to convince core-of-the-core communities like NeoGAF, and to convince NeoGAF, you need to convince Digital Foundry.

Recommended | Prey review
Typhone home.
How do you add intricacy to a genre as fearsomely intricate, as batty with systems, variables and knock-on effects as the so-called "immersive simulation"? One of Prey's answers to that question - and I promise this isn't me feeling around for a headline - is to add a bit of Minecraft. Folded in amongst the game's roster of Jedi uppercuts, fire pillars, remote hack attacks and prototype beam weapons is the ghostly suggestion of an in-game map editor. Consider the Recycler Charge - it looks like just another grenade, and can indeed be treated as such, but rather than blowing loose objects and enemies apart it sucks them in, stripping and compressing them to pleasing, Duplo-sized blocks and balls of generic raw material.

Review | Dirt 4 review
Grime music.
Dirt was always positioned as the Colin McRae Rally series' louder, brasher offspring, taking Codemasters' wonderfully pliable off-road racers and giving them a heavy American slant (at a time, it's worth remembering, when the late Scottish superstar was wowing fans across the Atlantic with his showstopping antics in the X-Games). It was a play for a broader audience that might have proved divisive, but it did result in a handful of lavish, bold and enjoyable games that were often more glitz than grime.

Video | Watch: Johnny plays Overwatch live
Moving the payload from 3pm
If you've been keeping an eye on our YouTube channel this year, you'll know we stream a different video game every Tuesday afternoon. Ian Higton - who notably doesn't enjoy playing Overwatch - ordinarily runs the show, streaming such things as Player Unknown's Battlegrounds or Friday the 13th. The only snag is that Ian's PC is currently broken, meaning there's absolutely nothing stopping me taking over and streaming two hours of Overwatch this afternoon. Sorry, Ian.

Video | Watch: The Star Fox games you never knew existed
Faux McCloud.
It's fair to say that, even after all its pre-release hype, Star Fox Zero failed to set the world alight. Sure, it was a bit of a disappointment - what with the unnecessarily awkward controls and all - but it's still not the worst Star Fox game ever made. Far from it, in fact.
