  9. Why can't Destiny 2 run at 60fps on PS4 Pro?

Digital Foundry | Why can't Destiny 2 run at 60fps on PS4 Pro?

4K resolution more viable than doubling frame-rate.

Bungie has confirmed that Destiny 2 will offer full PlayStation 4 Pro support, but some users have voiced concerns that the developer has chosen to target 4K display support instead of 60fps gameplay. The thinking is straightforward enough - ultra HD offers prettier visuals of course, but smoother gameplay offers lower latency and a higher level of precision response. This is exactly why franchise FPS titles like Battlefield and Halo transitioned across to 60 frames per second. So why not Destiny too?

  16. Searching for a video game hero

Feature | Searching for a video game hero

Or, why Dale Cooper is so hard to beat.

My favourite moment in Twin Peaks - I've just finished rewatching the first two series in readiness, and I cannot believe I am typing this, for the arrival of the third - is the start of episode one, season two. That groaning soundtrack kicks in and we're back at the Great Northern Hotel. Cooper has been shot, and yet Cooper survives, neatly arranged, arms out, on the floor of his hotel room. A little blood but not too much: a sense that he's going to make this. Big relief for a twelve-year-old fan.

  23. Old Man's Journey review

    Reverieman.

Old Man's Journey feels a lot like a children's book - one of those beautiful ones, with huge illustrations brightly printed on decent paper. The kind a certain kind of person might not really want to read with actual children, who would spill things, crease things, crayon all over things. The kind that might have a gentle gimmick to it - things to spot on each page, the odd flap to lift, a special kind of paint that reveals a texture when carefully presented with the whorls of the fingertips. The kind of book that doesn't come down off the shelf very often.

  28. Watch: Johnny cooks Rigglefuzz's BBQ Buzzard Wings from WoW

It's been a rough couple of weeks in Chiodini's Kitchen. First came the raw dough monstrosity that was the kwama egg quiche from The Elder Scrolls Online, swiftly followed by the hideous grog from The Secret of Monkey Island. With these culinary insults coming so swiftly off the back of one another, I was in dire need of something palatable to recreate from a video game - and soon.

  29. The Surge review

    Review | The Surge review

    Souls train.

Despite its futuristic setting there's a strange, Willie Nelson-esque song in The Surge. It's tucked away in the OPs rooms you encounter - OPs rooms being the equivalent of Dark Souls' bonfires. It's a hesitant, downbeat number that starts with the line 'I was born in a prison with no hope of escape'. I quite liked it at first, but it slowly became symbolic of my time playing The Surge; given enough repetitions it becomes dull and samey - a dispiriting inevitability couched in something that should, by rights, be thoroughly enjoyable.
