Feature | Investigating the origins of The Last Guardian's architecture
Shadow of the surrealists.
A wind-scoured castle, crumbling into a sun-bleached sea. A towering shrine, rising above a landscape of decaying ruins and moss-skinned rocks. An isolated tower surrounded by vast chasms, speckled with high-arched walkways and overgrown ledges. Though the games of Fumito Ueda may depict delicate relationships, vast beasts and impregnable mysteries, it has always been their distinctive architectural spaces that gave them a concrete form. Ever since Ico's castle hazily emerged from the bloom and mist on the games title screen in 2001, these monolithic structures have become symbols for the sense of scale, mysticism and artistry that have made Ueda's games instantly recognisable and widely loved.

Video | Watch: Steep makes you sound extremely creepy
Peak cringe.
Taken at face value, Ubisoft's Steep is a game about exploring the mountainside and having fun with friends. Delve a little way into its multiplayer functionality - which lets you ping an invite to anyone in your immediate vicinity with the press of a button - however, and it becomes something else altogether. Which is to say, it becomes a game about saying weird things to strangers while wearing a big parka.

Digital Foundry | Tech Analysis: The Last Guardian
Digital Foundry tracks the game's progress from initial target render to final code.
The Last Guardian is out at last. After the release of Ico in 2001 and Shadow of the Colossus four years later, it's fair to say Team Ico's third game has had the most troubled development of them all. When it began as a PS3 title in 2007, nobody could have anticipated a nine year wait to see the title on store shelves. But on its own terms the result is breathtaking; despite the age of its concept - and many of its assets - The Last Guardian's backdrops still wow due to on-point art direction from director Fumito Ueda. The story behind its technology however, from a leaked target render in 2009, to its eventual release in 2016, plays a big part in explaining how the final game turned out.

Digital Foundry | Samsung KS7000 4K TV review
The best gaming 4K HDR display under £1000.
When we first tested Samsung's KS7000, the all-important game mode wasn't available when viewing HDR material, instead limiting the display to movie mode and a mammoth 117ms of input latency - and that was a massive shame. Samsung's display technology is excellent, its HDR implementation has much to commend it, and in many other respects, both the KS7000 and its nearest US equivalent, the KS8000, are best in class in the mid-range market sector. Well, the good news is that game mode is now available with HDR via a recent firmware update, which means that you get all the benefits of Samsung's technology with a class-leading 23ms of lag, regardless of whether you're in HDR mode or viewing standard material.

Digital Foundry | What works and what doesn't with PlayStation 4 Pro
And what Microsoft can learn from it with Project Scorpio.
Just over a month has passed since PlayStation 4 Pro arrived in the Digital Foundry office - and we've been gradually working our way through its rapidly expanding library of game upgrades. The quality of Pro support varies from title to title but at its best, the new console absolutely delivers in providing an enhanced PlayStation experience worthy of a 4K display. Call of Duty Infinite Warfare, Battlefield 1, FIFA 17, Ratchet and Clank, Hitman, inFamous, Robinson: The Journey, Titanfall 2 - and doubtless many more - all provide a palpable, compromise-free upgrade. However, it's fair to say that it's also been a rocky road for the Pro and with Project Scorpio on the way, we can sure that Microsoft is watching intently, tweaking and refining its own 4K proposition based on feedback to the new PlayStation.

Feature | Grief and Gyaradoses: my time with Pokémon Sun
Happiness is where you find it - including the sun-warm beaches of Alola.
I'm on the train coming back from Indiecade Europe when it hits, that familiar grief. It's been eight months since my father died, but I'm not better like everyone assured me I'd be. More collected, maybe, more adept at outmaneuvering the memories, the should-have-dones, the could-have-dones, and the would-have-dones, all laid out like funeral garlands. I've adapted, I suppose. But I'm not better. I'm not sure if I'll ever be better.
