PES 2017's unlicensed club team names are as brilliant as ever
East Dorsetshire vs South Norwood? Why not?
If you, like me, played PES back in the day, you'll remember with fondness the silly names for clubs Konami came up with because it didn't have official licenses.

No Man's Sky's first post-launch patch is out now
Improves hardware support and framerate on PC, stability on PS4.
No Man's Sky launched to many technical difficulties on both PS4 and Steam. Crashes were common on both platforms and many PC users experienced optimisation issues that brought the framerate to a crawl. But now the game has a patch on both platforms that should alleviate many of these issues.

Digital Foundry | Digital Foundry: Hands on with PS4 Rise of the Tomb Raider
UPDATE: PlayStation 4 video shows Croft Manor, endurance co-op and a 'nightmare' zombie mode.
At Gamescom this week, we finally had the opportunity to spend some time with the much anticipated Rise of the Tomb Raider port for PlayStation 4. When we covered the previous iterations of the game, we were duly impressed - and it's exciting to finally see how it's shaping up on Sony's console. Those expecting a technical overhaul over the Xbox One game may be disappointed, but there are still plenty of new elements to enjoy.

Disgruntled No Man's Sky players thrust Sony's PS4 refund policy back into the spotlight
"It's like they put a gun to my head."
Sony's digital video game refund policy has been the subject of investigation on more than one occasion. Now, it's come under fire again from angry customers after the release of No Man's Sky.

Review | Metroid Prime Federation Force review
Samus it ever was.
This, then, is how Nintendo has chosen to mark Metroid's 30th anniversary. And this is how Nintendo has elected to break six years of silence for one of its most celebrated series: a co-op shooter with chibi visuals in which Samus Aran, the stoic bounty hunter who's fronted every Metroid to date, is relegated to the sidelines. Ever since its announcement at last year's E3, the reaction has been resoundingly negative. Given the path Nintendo's taken with this 3DS entry, it's no wonder some noses have been put out of joint.

Nice Haas.
It's taken its sweet time, but Codemasters has finally got there. When the Southam outfit first announced it had secured the F1 deal in 2008 it was in a petrolhead pomp, high on the fumes of Grid and the excellent Dirt 2's acclaim and success. This, surely, was to be a match made in heaven, the expertise of one of the best racing developers partnered with the ultimate licence in motorsport. It was set to be spectacular.

Digital Foundry | Face-Off: No Man's Sky
PlayStation 4 takes on budget and mainstream gaming PCs.
It's pretty obvious by this point that No Man's Sky has several clear advantages on PC over its PS4 stablemate. In the best case, it gets an expected push from 30fps to 60fps (and beyond), a vastly widened field of view, plus a clearer 16x anisotropic filtering pass for textures - with a bit of fiddling. With a slight reduction to terrain pop-in too, it's undoubtedly a better-looking game, though perhaps not the radical improvement PC gamers might have hoped for.

Feature | Watch: Little Nightmares taps into your darkest childhood fears
No point calling for your Maw-my.
Tarsier Studios, originally named Team Tarsier, was founded fifteen years ago by a group of seven students in Sweden. In the time since, it gained lucrative first party support from Sony and its ranks have swelled to around 45 people, but much of the work the studio has done over the years has been attributed to other developers entirely. Tarsier was a contributor on the original LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet 2 for PlayStation 3, and was responsible for LittleBigPlanet's port on the PS Vita. It also worked with Media Molecule on Tearaway Unfolded, the expanded PS4 remake of PS Vita exclusive Tearaway.

You can talk to the Titans in Titanfall 2's campaign
Details and a first look at Respawn's single-player offering.
'If only you could talk to these creatures', proclaimed the now infamous Edge review of the original Doom in an endearing and enduring daydream. It's a sentiment that's been mocked ever since, but they may have had a point - and at the very least it's something that's crossed the minds of Respawn as its worked on Titanfall 2's single-player. The original proved with some style that wall-running, double-jumping and relishing in automated headshots via a smart pistol can make for an awful lot of fun, but what if you could talk to the Titans?

Feature | No Man's Sky is a fine example of one type of game (but many people were expecting another)
Horse face, plate face.
I'm writing this a couple of days after the release of No Man's Sky. The incandescent vapour of Internet opinion is coalescing around a cooling core of critical consensus. I imagine that by the time you read this there will have been magmatic eruptions of violent dissent, an orbit of backlash and counter-backlash. The world's telescopes will have been trained on Sean Murray as he explains in defiant, melancholy interviews and blog posts why No Man's Sky is only exactly what everyone knew it would be: the world's most ambitious, expensive and beautiful walking simulator. Except you fly, of course. I'll come back to that.

Japan's Prime Minister just rocked up to the Olympics dressed as Mario
Shadow the Hedgehog, meanwhile, was nowhere to be seen.
Back when Beijing was handing the Olympics over to London in 2008, we were treated to the spectacle of one-man omnishambles Boris Johnson sheepishly taking on the flag to mark the handover before London 2012. Japan, which is cueing up 2020's games in Tokyo, has done things a little differently - and with a little more style.

Digital Foundry | In Theory: Can Sony upgrade PlayStation Neo's specs?
Microsoft's Scorpio spec is stronger. Can Sony close the gap?
The date is set. On September 7th, we will see what Sony's been up to with PlayStation Neo - we should finally get some idea of the firm's vision for the new hardware, details on software support, and if we're really lucky, we should see live demos of Neo titles courtesy of Sony first party studios, amongst others. But despite some pretty solid leaks, speculation continues on the actual Neo spec. Could Sony pull a surprise out of the bag and reveal a more powerful unit at the upcoming PlayStation Meeting?

Digital Foundry | Digital Foundry: Hands-on with DriveClub VR
The most immersive VR racing game yet?
On the face of it, a racing game on PlayStation VR shouldn't stand a chance against a high-powered PC coupled with Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, but after playing DriveClub VR at Gamescom this week, our viewpoint has shifted. Simply put - this is the most immersive racing game we've played in VR to date. From Assetto Corsa to Dirt Rally all the way to Project Cars, it's clear that the gorgeous visual design of the original DriveClub allows the game to stand above its more technically demanding peers. It's a classic case of software design triumphing over hardware limitations.

Feature | Forget Go - Pokémon Snap is the series' greatest spin-off
And this week's Virtual Console release is the perfect opportunity to revisit it.
Most of us fancy ourselves as virtual photographers these days. Not everyone is an Ansel Adams, but the tools for taking pictures have never been more accessible, nor as readily available to so many. In most games, it's merely a matter of pressing a button: Share, or F12, or F10 if you're using Fraps. Or saying "Xbox, take a- ah, damn, it moved. Xbo- hang on. Stop listening. Xbox, take a screenshot". (Okay, it's easier for some than for others.)

Surprise - reboot of multiplayer oddity Savage out now
Imagine a fantasy RTS where real people are your troops.
Do you remember Savage: The Battle for Newerth, that ambitious online shooter that mashed up first/third-person action and real-time strategy, and threw in role-playing systems too? Two players would play as opposing RTS generals, looking down on the fantasy field, and all the other players would be their units. Great idea. And it worked - providing you had players of the right temperament involved (Tom Bramwell wrote our Savage: The Battle for Newerth review).

It's inching ever closer to being a full package, even though, up until relatively recently, the game was due for release around now (Kingdom Come: Deliverance was delayed to 2017 in May).

Oh Gamescom you beautiful, sweaty maelstrom you. No matter how many trips to Cologne you have under your belt, Gamescom always manages to teach you something new - cherished lessons like 'oh gosh it's humid here' or 'that cathedral looks nice' or 'turns out bag thieves on the Eurostar are really efficient and now I have no camera' (that last one actually did happen to me once).

Feature | Watch: At least Metal Gear Solid 3 is still really good
As Johnny finds out in Late to the Party.
So, how about that Metal Gear: Survive, huh? Well look, no matter what happens, we still have the brilliant Metal Gear games of yore. Perhaps my favourite one is MGS3, because you got to fart around in the jungle and put lots of animals in your pockets to keep on hold as a handy snack. Despite having played and loved the earlier games in the series, Johnny had never played Snake Eater, and, at the risk of sounding like clickbait, the reason behind that may shock you. Exclamation mark.
