Feature | We Happy Few is a bit of a downer
Early impressions of Compulsion's dystopian yarn are cause for alarm.
Talk about a bait and switch: We Happy Few's prologue feels like it belongs to an entirely different game. The intro suggests a claustrophobic satire in the tradition of Portal and The Stanley Parable, casting the player as a rat caught in a violently jolly bureaucracy, somewhere in the heartlands of an alternate-history 1960s England. The Xbox Game Preview build opens, like the recent trailer, with player character Arthur Hastings busy at his desk, operating a censorship machine through a cheery haze of mood-altering drugs, till a chance article about his long-suppressed childhood dulls his buzz and slices away his allegiance to the regime.

Video | Watch: Six terrible games from awesome developers
Nobody's perfect.
Some developers, quite deservedly, can boast of excellent reputations for game development. With Overwatch, Hearthstone and World of Warcraft being as hugely popular as they are, for example, it's hard to imagine Blizzard ever having turned out a duff game.

Video | Watch: Smashing up ancient Greece in Okhlos
Hades game is fun.
If you've had a look at the Eurogamer video channel before (or read my Necropolis review, for that matter), you'll know I'm a big fan of roguelikes. There's something about the sense of challenge, the feeling of going it alone against insurmountable odds, that I really enjoy.

Video | Watch: 10 Second Ninja X is quite frustrating
Shuriken do better.
10 Second Ninja X is out now and goodness me does it ever make me want to smash my controller into little tiny pieces and then sprinkle those pieces over some breakfast cereal. It's not like I expected to top the global leaderboards when I started playing earlier today, but I at least expected a half decent performance. I'm alright at these games - or so I thought.

Video | Watch: This is the Police is fun, but ill-judged
How not to tackle certain issues.
This is the Police is an interesting game. Playing as a police chief, you have to respond to emergency calls and use the officers at your disposal to keep the crime rate down and earn yourself a nest egg. While the core experience is fun, however, there are some elements of This is the Police that are profoundly ill-judged.

Video | Watch: 32 minutes of psychedelic We Happy Few Xbox One gameplay
Ode to Joy.
We Happy Few turned out to be a very different game to the one I was expecting. The twisted, dystopian world shown in this year's E3 trailer suggested a game similar to Bioshock. Having spent an hour or two in the procedurally generated town of Washington Wells, however, I'm much more inclined to liken it to jolly hockey sticks survival horror game, Sir You Are Being Hunted. The Alpha build releases publicly today, but I've had a bit of head start with the Xbox One version - if you want to take a quick look at how the world of We Happy Few works, look no further.

Next Star Wars: The Old Republic expansion is Knights of the Eternal Throne
Due when the game turns five years old this autumn.
Star Wars: The Old Republic will expand again this autumn with the release of Knights of the Eternal Throne (the acronym KOTET is catchier, particularly when paired with "SWOTOR", which is how SWTOR tends to be pronounced - sounds a bit like an alien Star Wars language when you say it altogether out loud).
