  3. Ne'er Dwell: a few hours with Fallout Shelter

This morning, I stuck a load of people underground and made them very unhappy. They are starving, because there is very little food. They are constantly thirsty, because there is almost no water. They are uncommonly well lit, because I accidentally bought two power generators early on, tanking my economy just as it was starting to take flight. Sadly, all my surplus energy really proves is that you cannot eat or drink light.

  11. Performance Analysis: Hawken

Digital Foundry | Performance Analysis: Hawken

A last-gen game arrives on modern console hardware, with variable results.

It's been a long time coming. First released in 2012 after extended alpha and beta testing, Hawken's mech-fuelled combat action attracted plenty of attention owing to some highly attractive Unreal Engine 3-powered visuals. 12. VR is a revolution in control more than immersion

Feature | VR is a revolution in control more than immersion

    Tom Francis on Holopoint.

Holopoint is a VR archery game, and it's almost impossible to explain why it's so good without sounding like a wanker. It doesn't look like much. You're in a dojo, and some blue cubes straight out of My First Unity Project hang in the air around you. You shoot arrows at those, holding your bow in one hand and drawing back the arrow with the other. Sometimes they shoot at you. Eventually some holographic samurai show up and wade slowly toward you from all sides, feet sliding across the floor in a mismatched animation. You shoot these also.

    Pyramid scheme.

There's something captivating about games that keep their lore a mystery. In the same way a rarely glimpsed monster is far scarier on the silver screen, a game world explored through tiny story fragments can be spellbinding. Jaws had a fin gliding through the water; the terrifyingly intangible Bob seemed at once everywhere and nowhere in Twin Peaks; and Necropolis has a carved stone tablet complaining about how clean the floor was before your enemies 'threw a kegger'.
