Mobawatch.
Battleborn's in for a rough ride, and it has nothing to do with Gearbox's rapid decline in public approval. No, unfortunately for this curious and ambitious hybrid of bombastic FPS and tactically astute MOBA, it has a little game called Overwatch gatecrashing every party it tries to throw. Battleborn beta time? Here's Overwatch. Battleborn release day? Try the Overwatch open beta. Capitalism isn't pretty, even when it's masquerading as interactive Saturday morning cartoons.

Feature | How Strafe and GoNNER reimagine Spelunky as a shooter
Buried pleasure.
The action roguelike has quickly become among my favourite video game genres. It started with Mossmouth's delectable action platformer Spelunky and has quickly expanded into other polished procedurally-generated adventures like The Binding of Isaac, Nuclear Throne, Downwell, Enter the Gungeon, and Galak-Z. There's something simultaneously bite-sized and epic about growing from a scrappy wayfarer to a veteran hero with a Gandalfian bag of tricks up your sleeve.

The open beta is live now (try it if you haven't) and runs until Monday, 9th May. The full game launches 24th May - argh, what a wait!

Digital Foundry | Has Remedy fixed Quantum Break on PC?
Patch 1.7 allows 60fps and adds an option to remove upscaling - but big problems persist.
Quantum Break was left in a bit of state at the PC version's launch, but this week we have update 1.7 - a whopping 27GB patch - to potentially address its issues. Ranging from stuttering frame-rates owing to a 50fps cap on 60Hz displays, a 30fps mode with severe frame-pacing issues, and also driver crashes on Nvidia cards - it all left a bad taste in the mouths of those who'd spent so much on the game at launch. The good news is that with Remedy's latest patch things are looking brighter, and while there are still some major issues, it is indeed possible to play the game at a straight 1080p60.

Feature | Reigns and Clash Royale: Leadership is hard
King me!
I was reflecting the other day on the fact that leadership is hard. This wasn't, thankfully, because anybody had put me in charge of anything. I had simply glanced at my phone screen during an idle moment to see two crowns glancing back at me from different app icons, and I realised that neither app made me feel particularly kingly. The apps are Reigns, a sort of monarchy simulator that is also, almost inevitably, a sort of monarchy satire, and Clash Royale, a top-down CCG, tower defence thing that is so astonishingly popular on mobile that a bunch of lesser apps have sprung up around it like eager courtiers. Both of these games, I think, are saying that leadership is hard.
