The mad maestro's latest concoction, the "survival action" third-person combat game Let it Die, is one of his most daring offerings yet, though not due to the game's actual content.

Bastion and Transistor developer Supergiant has always made games with a lot of character, although they didn't necessarily have a lot of characters. Focused primarily on a sole hero/heroine with a supporting narrator and bit-part antagonist, they kept their narrative structures tight and focused. Supergiant's third outing, Pyre, seems to lose none of its forebears' craft and flavour, but has significantly expanded the scope to allow for an ensemble cast in a branching narrative arc.

The next console war has yet to begin but the battle lines have already been drawn and the processing firepower available to Microsoft and Sony is now a known quantity. It's Durango vs. Orbis, and it's a console head-to-head quite unlike anything we've seen before. The raw technological building blocks powering each next-gen console are designed by the same people, and the raw architecture is almost identical in nature as a consequence. The differences between the two consoles are less pronounced than in any preceding console generation: fundamentally, Sony and Microsoft faced the exact same challenges and went to the same people to find the solution, resulting in very similar end-products. However, there are differences between Durango and Orbis, and they reflect how the platform holders envisage the evolution of the home console.

Do the consoles have the raw horsepower to meet DICE's ambition?
Serving as both a prequel and a reboot of sorts, Mirror's Edge Catalyst swaps out the last-gen title's Unreal Engine 3 for DICE's proprietary Frostbite 3, with the developer targeting 60fps for this latest outing - a sizeable jump from the 30fps original. The recent beta gave us our first in-depth look at the game and the changes brought by the switch to a newer engine, which delivers a very different visual experience on screen from the original game. It's an ambitious effort, but even with a final round of optimisation to go, the question is - can the current-gen consoles deliver DICE's vision?

In 1972, Atari co-founder Nolan Bushell hired an electrical engineer named Allan Alcorn to work for his fledgling video game company. Alcorn was experienced in computer science but had never been involved in video game development, so Bushell set him a practice exercise: replicate a game with two paddles and a moving spot that he'd recently seen running on the Magnavox Odyssey. It was a simple tennis-based game, and Alcorn soon had his own version up and running.

When you set up an Oculus Rift, as I did this morning, with much misplugging of wires and bumping of head on underside of desk, you are greeted with a few vistas to acclimatise you to this brave new world of virtual reality that you are entering. And I mean entering. One of these vistas offers a brooding steampunkish cityscape, with scalpel towers rising into a gloomy sky while luminous airships drift up and down the skyscraper canyons. I was dazzled for a few seconds, and then I realised it was just a nearly-static diorama. If it was the start screen for a new Batman game, say, I would think it was artful and stylish and little more. I might take a screenshot and move on. But then I leaned forward and realised something else: I was sat on the precipice of a thirty-storey drop. I was dazzled all over again: VR has taken a skybox and slotted me right inside it.
