Feature | Budget Cuts is the future of VR right freakin' now
Drop everything.
Is VR the future? A tired old question, perhaps, but when you browse the Vive games available on Steam at the moment, VR certainly looks an awful lot like the present. You know: the glitchy, lovably half-baked present of any infant technology, in which people are chucking everything out there to see if there are glimmers of promise lurking within the fragments, in which people don't necessarily know what they've even made until they've seen all the ways that it doesn't quite work.

Digital Foundry | Performance Analysis: Battleborn beta on PS4 and Xbox One
Beyond Borderlands: Digital Foundry assesses Gearbox's latest console work.
The MOBA craze has transitioned to first person shooters, with two titles throwing up open beta tests within weeks of each other. Blizzard's Overwatch put in a solid 60fps appearance, but Battleborn takes a slightly different approach. Borderlands developer Gearbox caps performance at 30fps, with obvious implications for the gameplay in a high-speed shooter where controls need to be sharp and precise. As expected, the experience doesn't feel quite as tight as Blizzard's offering, but Battleborn has charms of its own.

Review | Star Fox Zero review
Roll out the barrel roll.
In the 19 years since Star Fox 64 there have been a handful of new entries in the series, but full-on sequels? Not so much. Rare's Star Fox Adventures was a famously wayward appropriation of the universe, Q-Games' Command a noble and enjoyable experiment that put the series back on rails but shot a little past its station while Namco's Assault found itself grounded by miserable third-person shooter sections. Star Fox Zero, a new outing that has blossomed from a small sketch by Shigeru Miyamoto that was intended to reassert the possibilities of the Wii U's eccentric GamePad, sees developer Platinum Games sticking much closer to the original script.

Video | Watch: 18 minutes of Frozen Synapse 2
Iceometric gameplay.
If you go to the Frozen Synapse website, it proudly proclaims that it is the ultimate tactical game, which is a pretty bold claim. It's also an erroneous one; with Frozen Synapse 2 on the way, that would technically make Frozen Synapse the penultimate strategy game.

Feature | PES's free Euro 2016 update is a bit of a disappointment
Euro sceptic.
A keen-eyed observer might have noticed a few new icons pop up in their PES 2016 menu a few weeks back. The game's latest patch, weighing in at a hefty 3.9GB, brought with it a raft of Euro 2016 content - but Konami's been pretty quiet about the release. It's hard to imagine a more underwhelming launch for the official licensed game of an international football tournament.

Feature | Why I love Overwatch's Play of the Game
No Mercy.
I love Play of the Game in Overwatch, that clip of someone doing something extraordinary during the battle you just had. I love the nervous little wait before you find out whose play has been picked. Will it be yours? Some games you know it won't because you had a stinker, but in other games - sometimes the stars align and enemies clump together like cat litter as your finger reaches for your ultimate ability. You think it's enough but has someone gone one better? Then there it is! There you are! The chosen one! Name in lights. Validation and recognition all in one smug lump.
