Digital Foundry | Digital Foundry vs Ratchet and Clank on PS4
Insomniac's iconic work compared and contrasted across three generations of PlayStation hardware.
Ratchet and Clank comes to PS4 in what can only be described as an epic, wholesale reimagining of the PS2 original. Taking advantage of the latest rendering technology, Insomniac delivers a superb platformer that ties into the upcoming CGI movie, closely resembling it in terms of visual style. It's a remarkable achievement that shows just how far 3D graphics have evolved from the franchise's PS2 origins, but there's more to the game than just a dramatic visual upgrade. Comparing it with the PS2 original and PS3 HD remaster, it's clear that this is a complete remake with redesigned levels, new story sequences and revised gameplay.

Recommended | Ratchet & Clank review
Lombax to the future.
Insomniac Games has made a lot of Ratchet & Clank games. From Going Commando to Into the Nexus, the Burbank studio has spent years reiterating its formula, perfecting the art of adventure. In fact, this game (based on the movie, based on the game) marks Insomniac's eleventh Ratchet & Clank game. Eleventh! What a lovely surprise to discover that fatigue hasn't set in. This is a game from a team that's clearly had fun whilst making it.

Feature | The strange joy of useless machines
Leave me alone.
I read a great theory once, arguing that the universe is elegantly wasteful. Is it even possible to be both wasteful and elegant? Whatever: when the universe wants to do something, according to this theory, it gets the job done, but it gets it done in the way that will use up the most energy. If the universe wants to get over a wall, it doesn't build a ladder, it builds a jetpack.

Feature | How video games could save your life
Life, the universe and everything at CCP Fanfest.
From the archive: With this year's Eve Fanfest just around the corner, it seemed like a good moment to revisit this piece from April 2015 about last year's event. With CCP adopting a more workmanlike commitment to Eve Online's future - rather than the wide-eyed ambitions of old - its annual jamboree in Reykjavik had never felt more like videogaming's TED conference.

Digital Foundry | Face-Off: Microsoft Xbox Elite controller vs Razer Wildcat
Can premium-priced controllers make you a better player?
At Digital Foundry we often talk about hardware upgrades that can dramatically improve the gameplay experience, but there's a fundamental component that is often overlooked: the controller. As the primary input device for console gamers, this is the core component in how we interact with our games, working to connect us with the action on-screen and to deliver feedback across the course of play. A great controller connects you more closely with the game, while a flawed one does the opposite, actively impacting the quality of gameplay - as any fighting game fan forced to use the Xbox 360 controller's d-pad will tell you.

Digital Foundry | What does it take to run Dark Souls 3 at 1080p60?
Targeting the premium PC experience, with hardware tests from budget rigs up to top-tier components.
From Software has come a long way since its first Dark Souls port to PC. Back then, it was a timid dipping of the toe for the studio, and one that drew ire for its sub-720p, 30fps delivery. Fast track to 2016 and it's quite a different story. Dark Souls 3 is replete with options on PC that gives players far more wiggle room than ever before - plus the ability to run at 1080p and beyond. Barring its peak cap of 60fps that's at odds with higher-refresh monitors, the out-of-the-box experience is strong, and lends itself well to a testing across a range of PC set-ups.

Video | Watch: Where did Resident Evil go wrong?
Here's this week's Eurogamer Show.
Resident Evil has a long and sometimes proud history. I think it's fair to say that the first couple of Resident Evil games were genre defining, which makes it all the more tragic to contemplate the state in which the series currently exists.

Feature | Is Battleborn any fun if you don't know what you're doing?
An idiot fiddles around with the open beta's story mode.
I love Borderlands and I like the idea of MOBAs. The reality of MOBAs, however, generally scares me half to death. Now listen: if I'm not describing someone who sounds a bit like you, stop reading now because the following will be a waste of your time. (Well, even more a waste of your time than usual.) If this does sound a bit like you, however, stick around for a minute or two. I'm about to answer a question that I woke up thinking about this morning: Is Battleborn any fun if you don't know what you're doing?

Some people are upset the new Mirror's Edge locks abilities behind XP upgrades

Since yesterday's preview embargo lifted, there's been a lot of talk online about the unlock system in Mirror's Edge Catalyst. NeoGAF user A-V-B posted an image of the movement skill tree, replying to a comment from another user who said: "If rolling, and swinging from poles, and 90-degree turns, are locked behind XP upgrades, I am pissed."

Feature | Why you should install Dark Souls 3 patch 1.03
Significantly improved performance, but issues remain.
Dark Souls 3 was released in Japan a few weeks before the rest of the world, offering an early glimpse at the game on both PS4 and Xbox One. We took advantage of this, testing the performance level of the earlier, spoiler-free parts of the game. Since then, many players have reached the end of the game and reports have emerged, suggesting that late game regions were suffering from sluggish performance reminiscent of Blighttown - the original Dark Souls' most notorious performance trouble spot. Clearly, remaining spoiler-free wasn't going to cut it. If frame-rates degraded later on in the game, we needed to check it out.

Video | The open world of Mirror's Edge Catalyst is barebones in a good way
Finial Fantasy.
I love seeing how open worlds fit together. Done right, they become hugely empowering spaces - you can go anywhere, interact with anyone and do pretty much anything. Most importantly though, you can do all of this at your own pace; Red Dead Redemption was my favourite game of the last console generation because it was such a fantastic world to potter around in, picking up little quests and (cow) poking around with a sometimes glacial tread.

Gears of War 4 multiplayer changes things up in some cool ways
Yank and Shank.
At a recent event I had a chance to play Gears of War 4 multiplayer on Xbox One (Microsoft has yet to announce a PC version but it seems like a safe bet), and it's pretty good. It's familiar in that it feels very much like Gears of War multiplayer - Gears of War 3 multiplayer, that is, as opposed to Gears of War: Judgment's - but there are a few tweaks to the gameplay that stand out, and one new weapon that's sure to go down well.
