  3. Face-Off: Dark Souls 3

    Digital Foundry | Face-Off: Dark Souls 3

Clash of the consoles: PS4 takes on Xbox One.

Developed by two separate teams within From Software, Dark Souls 3 arrives a year on from the excellent Bloodborne, with the apparent aim of bringing closure to the Souls series. The engine of the PlayStation 4 exclusive returns too, now put to work in rendering a beautiful, withered fantasy world on other formats, including Xbox One and PC. Today we focus on the two console versions - a clash that reunites Sony's machine with From's core tech to bring out some clear PS4 advantages.

Video | Watch: Why can't games get lying right?

    Here's this week's Eurogamer Show.

I adore tabletop games. Whether it's a quickfire card game like Jaipur or Love Letter, an all-day epic like Twilight Imperium, or even a pen and paper RPG campaign stretching for years at a time, I'm probably excited to be round the table.

  5. Sex, shopping and video game longevity

Feature | Sex, shopping and video game longevity

    Lastability Brown.

Recently two interesting events have made me think about this idea of lasting happiness specifically in relation to video games. First, Liam Edwards asked me to take part in his podcast series, Final Games, in which he asks his guests to name eight games they'd take to a figurative desert island. A few of the interviewees have taken this as an opportunity to just talk about their favourite titles of all time, which is fine, but I really considered the prospect of being alone with these things for the rest of my life. What sort of game can bear that level of responsibility? In the end, I went for a lot of simulations - The Sims, Civilization, Minecraft - because I felt the way these titles combine systemic depth with user creativity meant that I wouldn't get bored with them.

Video | Watch: Aoife plays Condemned: Criminal Origins for the first time

It's a scary new episode of Late to the Party.

I've got a huge soft spot for Condemned: Criminal Origins. I was working night shifts when I first played it; after work I would rush back home while it was still dark, turn my headphones up loud and get absorbed in the dark and depraved world that Sega had created. Good horror games will always leave you with at least one memory of an excellent scare; Dead Space has that lift scene right at the beginning for instance. Condemned, on the other hand, left me with a whole host of terrifying moments that are burned into my brain - the butcher, the subway tunnels, and pretty much anything involving the mannequins. Oh God, the mannequins...

  11. Salt and Sanctuary review

Recommended | Salt and Sanctuary review

    Praise the salt!

Lots of games compare themselves to Dark Souls these days. Why wouldn't they? From Software's instant classic began as a niche import with Demon's Souls before taking the world by storm and spreading its influence everywhere. "It's like Dark Souls with zombies" Ubisoft would say about Zombi U. "It's like Dark Souls with cars" people have said of Dirt Rally. So when you hear that The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile developer Ska Studios' non-linear action platformer Salt and Sanctuary was going to be "like Dark Souls", it's easy to write it off as another buzzword attempted to raise interest in the umpteenth metroidvania on the digital market. But good lord, this is a lot like Dark Souls.

  12. Batman: Arkham Knight gave us the hero we deserve

There's a new Batman film out this weekend and it's certainly taking a beating by critics. That's not unusual for the brooding vigilante, who holds the heavy burden of fan expectations on his armoured shoulders. Just last year the caped crusader received a thrashing when Rocksteady released the finale of its dark knight series, Batman: Arkham Knight, with a botched PC port. It was a sad state of affairs that Warner Brothers was rightfully taken to task for, yet this conversation - and some nitpicks about the new batmobile - overshadowed the fact that Rocksteady delivered Batman's finest video game adventure to date.

  13. Star Wars Battlefront has made some great strides since launch - the Outer Rim DLC isn't one of them

If there's one thing you can rely on DICE for, it's superb post-release support. It's what helped the hobbled Battlefield 4 back on its feet, pushing it towards greater strides that eventually saw it become one of the finest multiplayer shooters available on console (that single-player campaign, of course, was always going to be well beyond repair), and it's what's kept me sticking around with Battlefront, the slick Star Wars tie-in that was perhaps a little too streamlined upon its launch late last year.

  14. Want to import Dark Souls 3 on PS4? Here's what you should know

Dark Souls fans will no doubt have heard by now that a strange exploit has resulted in Xbox One owners being able to snag the English version of From Software's highly-anticipated action-RPG ahead of its 12th April western release. That trick doesn't work on PS4, however, though overly excited fans can purchase the Japanese release, should they jump through a few import-related hoops.

Review | Fallout 4 The Automatron review

    Titanfallout.

The thing I like best about Fallout 4's first DLC pack is that it lets you decide precisely how pissed off you want to feel about Bethesda's companion AI. Automatron's customisable robot buddies come in all shapes and sizes and so, of course, do Fallout's environments - it's therefore wise, before entering a derelict building, to make adjustments not just to your droid's arsenal, but the width of its stride.
