What's quite a pleasant surprise is that it's now looking like a (reasonably) affordable thing thanks to the PlayStation VR's recently announced price point. Sony's unit now looks like it's got the best chance to crack the mainstream market that Oculus and Vive have priced themselves out of, and it's got a pretty decent looking software line-up already.

Some of you will never be happy if it's not Half-Life 3, or at least another Left 4 Dead. Some of you just want to know what's in the next update for Dota 2, Counter-Strike: GO or Team Fortress 2. Some of you are still pretending that Steam Machines are going to be a thing. And some of you are wondering if Valve is really a game developer any more, or just a particularly idiosyncratic, not to say gnomic, platform company with more revenue than it knows what to do with and a habit of half-indulging its whims. (Hello, Steam Controller.)

Feature | Rift's launch line-up has the quality and quantity - but is it too safe?
The VR twist, rather than the VR difference.
Oculus showed 41 games for the Rift VR headset in San Francisco ahead of this week's Game Developers Conference. Impressively, a full 30 of them will launch with Rift in a couple of weeks on 28th March. Most of the remaining 11 will follow hot on their heels. This is great software support by the standards of any game hardware launch I can think of, let alone one by a company new to this sort of thing (albeit with Facebook's deep coffers behind it). Oculus' confidence in putting it all on display is justifiable.

Feature | An afternoon with Just Cause 3's Sky Fortress
Come for the jetpack, put up with the mission design.
The jetpack - or Bavarium Wingsuit - that you're given at the very start of Just Cause 3's new Sky Fortress DLC is quite a thing. Seriously. Hold a button to blast off from the ground, and then you're up, up and away, riding a trail of neon blue fog as you head for the stars. That initial boost won't last forever, but once you're gliding, you can top yourself up with toots on a recharging thruster, and you can even air brake to pull off fancy turns, or to screw up fancy turns and starfisj yourself against a tree. You have a machine gun and a rocket launcher, both available in-air and saved from spamming by their own cooldowns. Best of all is a barrel roll, which you can pull off just as an enemy missile is about to hit you. It's a beautiful thing, in-game text announcing your success as the golden contrail of the rocket with your name on it races past inches from an arm or leg. People talk about Sky Fortress as being the Iron Man mod, and you glimpse it very clearly in these moments. Swoosh!

Sniper Elite 4 brings a little more polish and a lot more scale to the series
A World War 2 themed Metal Gear Solid. Who doesn't want to play that?
Spare a thought for the poor soldier standing on the balcony of an opulent Italian townhouse, looking out over a sun-kissed bay that's radiant in pastel blues and deep terracotta reds. He's recently signed up to the army to escape his abusive father, a little in-game text tells us as we train our sights on him, giving us brief pause for thought.
