  5. Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak review

Review | Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak review

    Kharaking good fun.

If Deserts of Kharak's development mutation was a difficult, complex or painful one, it certainly doesn't show. Originally known as Hardware: Shipbreakers, the game was transformed into a Homeworld prequel after Canadian developers Blackbird Interactive were handed the license by the mighty Gearbox (outbidding some prestigious peers to snatch it from the still warm grip of a bankrupt THQ). Hardware: Shipbreakers was always going to be at least a spiritual successor, but now it stands proud both as a bona fide prequel and a classy, capable RTS in its own right.

  11. 30 years in space: Meet the man who's kept space sims flying

It's hard to say what the most overused plot in gaming might be, but when it comes to a certain genre it's fair to say that the launching of a fleet of hastily built space arks in an effort to evade extinction is about as derivative as it gets. It's somewhat fitting that the collective history of said games has followed precisely the same trajectory.

  12. Remembering Dragon Age: Origins

Feature | Remembering Dragon Age: Origins

    Apples and origins.

Dragon Age: Origins marked the point at which western RPGs properly moved into the spotlight. Knights Of The Old Republic laid the groundwork, combining a surprisingly geeky implementation of Dungeons and Dragons rules with its direct player control and swishy lightsabers. Jade Empire then tried to take it somewhere new, only to stumble right out of the gate. It modernised the genre, offering something fresh, but it never really got its due.

  13. Blackmagic Video Assist review

Digital Foundry | Blackmagic Video Assist review

£350 buys you a broadcast quality 1080p60 mobile capture device that works beautifully with gaming hardware.

Video capture is a key component in virtually every Digital Foundry article we produce. Since 2007, our mantra has been to grab every last pixel pumped out by console HDMI port in order to produce evidence-driven analysis - and back in the day that involved working with companies specialising in medical and military imaging in order to create bespoke capture solutions that simply didn't exist at the time. But things have changed: PCs that used to cost us thousands to build back in the day have been replaced by commodity devices offering excellent quality at a very low cost - which sums up Blackmagic's new £350/$499 Video Assist quite succinctly.

    It's this week's Eurogamer Show.

The closed beta for The Division has gone live, letting players close car doors and look at digital dogs to their hearts' content. With the game so close to launch though, is the beta really a meaningful test exercise for Ubisoft, or is it simply another marketing beat?

  16. Keith Stuart on: horror, madness and control

Feature | Keith Stuart on: horror, madness and control

From Darkest Dungeon to Dead Space.

There is a famous phrase, often attributed to the Greek dramatist Euripides but likely much older: whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad. The loss of control and identity that "madness" represents (and we should all be aware that madness is a colloquial term for an array of complex mental health issues) is a primal human fear - our sense of self is the only constant in our lives so to lose that is an unthinkable horror.

A text interview with Raik's creator, too.

Anxiety disorders are the most common of all mental health problems. They're also - and I speak from experience here - rubbish to live with. Despite their prevalence, however, anxiety disorders are rarely discussed, partly because they make their sufferers feel like they have no place bringing them up in conversation.

Don't hold your breath for This War of Mine Little Ones content on PC

"I'm afraid we're too small to do everything at once."

This War of Mine arrives on PS4 and Xbox One today, and includes new content called The Little Ones. This introduces children to the game, via various parent-and-child campaigns, and they bring with them a few new mechanics and give the game a sense of heart. That's what I wrote in my review.

  23. Lego Marvel's Avengers review

Review | Lego Marvel's Avengers review

    More bang for your Bucky.

There's a real art to crafting a good superhero story. Ideally, you want the stakes to be sky-high, building to a shattering climax that screams Nothing! Will! Ever! Be! The! Same! Again! And yet, the most popular comics characters have been around for decades, which makes it tricky to mess with them. Whatever you try and do to Steve Rogers - and in the past decade alone, Captain America has been assassinated, resurrected, de-super-soldiered and even replaced by his best friend - eventually it will all be undone. When you're dealing with iconic IP, and your business model is predicated on another issue coming out next month, things can never really change.

  24. Digital Foundry: Hands-on with HTC Vive Pre

Digital Foundry | Digital Foundry: Hands-on with HTC Vive Pre

Valve and HTC's production SteamVR hardware comes into focus.

This week, Valve hosted the SteamVR Developer Showcase in Seattle, with 12 separate games demonstrated running on the latest Vive Pre hardware. We were invited along, the event consisting of a full afternoon of demos running in sequence - 15 mins on a particular demo, followed by 15 minutes to gather thoughts and write notes. Suffice to say that putting together an article with so much source content is going to take some time, but we can kick off with some observations on the latest revision of the hardware itself - said to be very, very close to final production product.

    Growing pains.

My daughter is useless and annoying, a drain on my limited resources with no redeeming factor. She needs attention and food, but she can't use workbenches, she can't clear rubble, can't cook, can't guard, can't scavenge. She's a luxury I cannot afford. She's inefficient.

Super Mario Maker's most challenging level has been beaten

By the creator of Bomb Voyage and Pit of Panga: P-Break.

Super Mario Maker fanatic and sadistic level designer PangaeaPanga is infamous for crafting nigh impossible challenges. His Bomb Voyage stage took over 11k attempts to complete, while his follow-up Pit of Panga: P-Break was touted as the hardest Super Mario Maker level ever until it was bested by a Japanese streamer only a few days after it was released. Last week PangaeaPanga released a new challenge for only the most masochistic of Mario players with: Cape Escape.
