  3. Dragon's Dogma on PC is a HD remaster in all but name

Digital Foundry | Dragon's Dogma on PC is a HD remaster in all but name

Digital Foundry's verdict on the PC version of Capcom's RPG.

Dragon's Dogma finally comes to PC three years after the game first hit Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and arguably Capcom needs to deliver more than a straightforward port to justify such a late release. Previously, we've seen high some high profile Japanese titles poorly converted over to PC, with resolutions capped below 720p and frame-rates limited to 30fps - an experience well below the standard expected for a PC release. Thankfully, none of these issues are present with Dragon Dogma: Dark Arisen and Capcom delivers a largely excellent conversion that fits the bill as a full-on HD remaster.

  15. Darkest Dungeon review

    Recommended | Darkest Dungeon review

    Eat, Pray, Lovecraft.

I was feeling pretty good during my first few hours of Darkest Dungeon - until I met The Collector, anyway. Not good good, of course. More specifically, you could say I was feeling terrible. But if you're only feeling terrible in Darkest Dungeon, you're actually feeling pretty good: one guy in my adventuring party had rabies, another had become paranoid, a third was edging towards something that would turn out to be masochism of some stripe. Still, we'd been at it for four or five rooms, so what do you expect? Only rabies? Only a little masochism? What's the problem?

From the archive: Digital Foundry on the genesis of the epic RPG and its miraculous Xbox 360 adaptation.

This week, Microsoft re-released The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings via backward compatibility, and for a limited time, the game is available to download for free for Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners in selected regions. It's a welcome gift and well worth checking out on either console, especially as it runs rather well on the new Microsoft console. With that in mind, we decided to republish our article on the game's technological genesis, first published in May 2012.

  18. Acer X34 Predator vs XR341CK: two ultra-wide gaming displays reviewed

Digital Foundry | Acer X34 Predator vs XR341CK: two ultra-wide gaming displays reviewed

Curved 21:9 screens with 3440x1440 resolution, IPS panels, G-Sync/FreeSync support and more.

Is 4K really the future of gaming? A quick look at the Steam hardware survey reveals that 1080p is the dominant gaming resolution, with all others occupying less than one per cent of the market. In short, the long term migration to 1440p and 4K is by no means a fait accompli and there's room for PC display tech to evolve in different, more intriguing directions. All of which leads us to the new wave of ultra-wide 21:9 aspect ratio displays and this brace of excellent new monitors: the Acer X34 Predator and the XR341CK.

  19. A different creed: the legacy of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

Feature | A different creed: the legacy of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

What can one Ubisoft franchise learn from another?

The Assassins were supposed to protect the Prince, not steal his crown. If you're a fan of courtly intrigues, or at least courtly intrigue as a metaphor for franchise evolution, I recommend reading up on Prince of Persia: Assassin, a Sands of Time spin-off that was in pre-production at Ubisoft Montreal across 2003 and 2004. Eschewing the storybook morality of its predecessor, the game would have cast the player as a hooded bodyguard armed with pop-out wristblades and a repertoire of vicious grappling moves, escorting an AI-controlled princeling through Jerusalem. This bloodthirsty mixture had promise, but was seen as too severe a departure for the franchise, so Ubisoft greenlit Assassin as a new IP. Thus the seed that produced the 70 million-selling Assassin's Creed series - and through Assassin's Creed, the open world action-adventure genre of the present day.

  20. Is it time for a PS4 SSD upgrade?

Digital Foundry | Is it time for a PS4 SSD upgrade?

With ever-increasing loading times, a radical solution is required.

It was the straw that broke the camel's back. In testing Just Cause 3 on PS4 and Xbox One, we found ourselves slumped in front of our screens, waiting for interminably long load times to finally complete. At its worst, Avalanche's open world title chalked up a remarkable two minute wait, even with the day one patch installed. Similar to Bloodborne last year, it required later patches to address the issue, but regardless, we had to do something - anything - to mitigate this issue. And as things stand, I've gone for the nuclear option: I've installed an SSD.

  22. Long tail: the near-endless joy of unlockable content

The ubiquity of Season Passes and layers of post-release DLC is a standard part of today's gaming landscape. Many saw it coming with Oblivion's infamous horse armour; with the majority of modern consoles constantly gulping down new data from our gaping broadband pipes, it was only a matter of time before publishers saw the opportunity for earning regular chunks of income. And why shouldn't they? Businesses are, after all, in the habit of making money, and adaption to the target market is a vital part of this process. The problem, though, is twofold: firstly, as customers with brain cells, watching DLC fragments become Season Passes, which then evolve into paywalls that lock out initial players, can often leave a sour taste.
