    Rhythm abstraction.

Guitar Hero was where the music video game went to find an audience and it was where the music video game went to make money (for a while, at least). While Sony's PaRappa the Rapper had a certain Sesame Street hip-hop chic and Beatmania appealed to the Japanese arcade showboater, it was only in Harmonix's take on rock pantomime that the emerging genre found a stadium-sized crowd. The game, which soon inspired a generation of copycats, brought the showmanship of the concert into the living room.

  7. Apple TV 2015 review

Digital Foundry | Apple TV 2015 review

Cupertino's next-gen media streamer falls short as a games machine.

According to Apple, the future of TV is apps - where streaming media content combines with a modicum of processing power in order to bring us the entertainment we want, when we want it, backed up by a range of functionality and discoverability that traditional TV simply can't supply. The fact that more powerful hardware is at the core of all of the next-gen streamers means that they also double-up as games consoles too, turning the likes of the new Apple TV and Nvidia Shield Android TV into all-in-one entertainment centres. But what more do they offer compared to standard consoles or cheapo media boxes - do we really need a set-top box revolution?

    Save the last human?

Between The Swindle and Invisible, Inc, 2015 was a pretty brilliant year for thieves, so I figured that my Christmas game would be Sly 4, which I'd missed upon its release, but glimpsed in passing. A world of midnight skies and clattering over rooftops: the perfect treat for late December.

DF reveals its high-tech tools: Microsoft Paint and a calculator.

720p, 792p, 900p - video games often operate at significantly lower native resolutions than the 1080p output of the console may suggest. We've discussed at length our opinions on how much this actually matters to the gameplay experience (generally speaking, 900p isn't as much of a visual comedown as the raw maths suggest) but in this piece, we'll be going into depth on how we actually make the calculations - and how you can produce your own analyses.

    Spinning a Yharnam.

That's more like it. At the end of last year it was hard not to look back at our top 10 and let out a little sigh of disappointment: it was almost nothing but sequels and expansions, suggesting that the new generation was taking its time to find its feet. 2015, however, saw video games in fine stride. There's quality but also a staggering amount of breadth, a list that has something for everyone (as well as a few notable casualties, so rich were the pickings this year).

    No prizes for guessing Ian's.

The nice thing about running the Eurogamer YouTube channel is that we can get away with doing game of the year a little differently. Eschewing the voting process whereby one game is selected (and thereby ensuring we don't end up murdering one another), each member of the video team has made a video about their personal game of 2015.

  26. Xbox in 2015: A textbook year, but it's time to innovate again

It is time, probably, for all of us - and by us I mean gamers, the gaming press, this site, myself - to move on. To stop bringing it up. The bungled launch of Xbox One two years ago has had a profound effect on the fortunes of Microsoft's gaming brand, but it is a closed book. It is far enough in the past that Xbox reps can now bring it up in conversation with a wry, amused, amazed shake of the head and shrug of the shoulders. And in the here and now, for gamers, it is a practical non-issue.

  27. Eurogamer's Games of 2015 no. 2: Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid games have often had a tension running through them - between the player and their purpose in the sublime Sons of Liberty, or between the mechanics and the cinematic pretensions in the ridiculous Guns of the Patriots. Phantom Pain, which still stands with the benefit of a few month's hindsight as the greatest Metal Gear Solid of them all, is riddled with a different kind of tension. It may well be a tension that's existed in the series' past, but it's the first time it's made itself known so explicitly in-game.

  28. How to cheaply upgrade your PS4 to 2TB

Digital Foundry | How to cheaply upgrade your PS4 to 2TB

Updated! £60 gets you a superb mass storage upgrade - and a USB caddy for your old drive.

This article was first published in August 2014, but one year on, the advice here still represents the cheapest and most cost-efficient way to upgrade your PS4 to 2TB. However, the upgrade situation isn't quite as clear as it was, because Seagate has released an updated 2015 model of our preferred upgrade drive. At the time of writing, both 2014 and 2015 models are available to buy and we would recommend the older version. The exact same drive is inside both units but the older version is a touch cheaper and the USB caddy is much, much easier to open. Important note: The 1TB version of the Seagate drive is not suitable for the PS4 transplant procedure. There is no SATA connection on the internal drive, meaning it is not compatible with the PlayStation 4. The 2TB models indicated work fine.

  29. Eurogamer's Games of 2015 no. 3: Splatoon

What is it that's kept me coming back to the three minute match-ups of Splatoon all year long? Maybe it's in the little details that can make Nintendo games such a joy - the satisfying splosh as you dive into ink, like the wholesome plonk of a hefty pebble being dropped into a pond - or how its scraps are a viscous riot as giddy and giggly as a food fight.
