Escape From New York IP-holder wanted to sue Metal Gear Solid
John Carpenter said not to, because Kojima is "a nice guy".
It's no secret that Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima is a fan of John Carpenter's 1981 Kurt Russell vehicle Escape From New York. I mean, the main character in his beloved stealth series is even named after New York's gruff anti-hero and they even share the same mullet, eyepatch, five o'clock shadow and gruff voice. There's yet another reference to Kurt Russell's character in Metal Gear Solid 2 wherein Snake goes by the alias "Iroquois Plissken". The similarities were so close that the company who owns the rights to the film, CanalPlus, wanted to sue Kojima over it.

Digital Foundry | Face-Off: Assassin's Creed Syndicate
London calling.
Assassin's Creed Syndicate sees Ubisoft redeem its flagship series after the catastrophic launch of last year's Unity. Our initial impressions painted a promising picture: performance is substantially improved, while the gameplay experience is also more stable with little in the way of bugs and glitches. Some crucial changes are made to the engine and there's the sense that Ubisoft has rebalanced the AnvilNext tech for the new game. In effect, this piece isn't just a comparison between Xbox One and PS4 versions of the title - more fascinating are the compromises and improvements made to the core technology in the wake of the Unity debacle.

The deceptively harmless Kingdom coming to Xbox One
Is profitable after 24 hours on PC/Mac.
Does Kingdom ring a bell? Apparently it's all I write about now. It's the charmingly retro-styled side-on game about building a kingdom that can hold out against baddies. It doesn't explain itself because working it out is the game, and it's fiendishly compelling. I recommend it. Right now, however, all you can play it on is PC (Windows, Linux) and Mac.

Avoid | Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water review
Craperture.
When my friends and I used to play the old Project Zero games (known as Fatal Frame in the US) way back in the early 2000s, we had one rule: the lights must always be off. If we had to take a bathroom break or go to the kitchen to giggle over our frayed nerves, a lamp was allowed, but once you had the controller in your hand, you had to fully commit. Sat in darkness, we'd scare ourselves silly under the glow of the old CRT monitor. It was our ritual when playing a series all about rituals. How ironic that in Project Zero's newest incarnation, the Wii U exclusive Maiden of Black Water, the lights are on, but no-one seems to be home. It's a mess.
